Race 4 - JASON HOLDEM CONTRACTING MOBILE PACE
Stewards have concluded their investigation in to Driver D Butcher's apparent lack of vigour in driving CAULFIELD in the run home. When questioned on the day Mr Butcher stated that CAULFIELD is a big overgrown 3yo which is somewhat one paced and has shown a strong aversion to the whip for both himself and previous Trainer/part-owner R Stechman so the whip is only used sparingly if at all in driving the gelding. Mr Butcher further stated that CAULFIELD tries hard and was doing his best after being flicked with the whip on several occasions when leading up the 400m straight before being headed by LETSGODANCING near the 100m when that mare came at him fast and 'beat him for speed'. He also added that he had then asked CAULFIELD for more but the gelding had not been able to quicken and that it was more a case of LETSGODANCING coming to the end of its run rather CAULFIELD taking ground back off that runner. In addition to this Mr Butcher pointed out that the final 400m had been run in 28.0 seconds which was only bettered in the main race of the day and that CAULFIELD had tended to shift out throughout the run home which supported his assertion that the gelding was under pressure and doing its best. Stewards then reviewed CAULFIELD's previous race start along with its qualifying trial and workout performances which supported what Mr Butcher had stated in relation to how the gelding was best driven. After giving the matter due consideration no further action was deemed necessary apart from advising Mr Butcher that given similar circumstances in the future that he would be expected to show greater urgency in driving his runner out so that the public perception is that both he and his horse are clearly doing their best.
