Race Comments

Race 1   OUTBACK TRADING HANDICAP TROT
The start was delayed due to ALVIRA HEST requiring a gear alteration prior to the start.
GET ON THE SAUCE - trotted roughly over the early stages. Commenced to give ground near the 450 metres. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. When spoken to regarding the performance of the gelding Driver S Dickson advised he was disappointed with today's effort and could offer no explanation.
BREAK FREE - broke on straightening for the run home but soon settled. Trotted roughly passing the 100 metres. Authorisation of 4th place was withheld until Stewards confirmed that the gelding had complied with the Breaking Horses Regulation.
HAKA PRIDE - broke near the 1300 metres losing its chance.
MACKALI - broke at the start and trailed the field.
ALVIRA HEST - briefly hampered by a weakening runner near the 450 metres.
KRISTOFFERSON - broke near the 1400 metres losing its chance.
Race 2   HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZOE SIMPSON MOBILE PACE
I WON'T BACK DOWN - pulled hard during the score up. Over-raced early stages before being taken forward to race outside the leader approaching the 1400 metres but continued to over-race for some distance thereafter.
GREENBACK BOOGIE - the mare was reluctant to take the passing lane in the early stages of the run home.
IDEAL ZEN - out of position at the start with Driver S Dickson being issued a warning. Mr Dickson was also warned for using his whip free of the rein on one occasion in the run home. When questioned regarding the tactics he adopted in the middle stages Mr Dickson explained that his stablemate I WON'T BACK DOWN was over-racing badly to his inside and had started to make abnormal breathing noises, so in the interests of safety he allowed Driver P Davis to shift that runner out off the marker line to sit parked which provided him with a favourable trail. Stewards accepted his explanation in this instance.
UNCHANGED MEMORY - out of position at the start with Driver S Ottley issued a warning.
NOWUCMENOWUDON'T - out of position at the start with Driver S Doody issued a warning.
BET ON STEPH - briefly held up leaving the final bend.
Race 3   WAIRARAPA HARNESS HERE 16 NOVEMBER MOBILE PACE
ADDO CARR - over-raced middle stages.
MISS MARKLE - raced three wide early and middle stages.
ARTFUL LIVING - lay in during the score up. Continued to lay in at various stages. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners.
LETSGODANCING - Driver P Davis was warned for being out of position at the start.
CARSE O FERN CULLY - broke briefly late in the score up. A warning was placed on the gelding's barrier manners. Lay in entering the first turn contacting ARTFUL LIVING. A further warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners. Over-raced middle stages when caught three wide without cover. Commenced to weaken near the 500 metres. When questioned regarding the tactics he adopted during the middle stages Driver B Taylor explained that he had some difficulty with the gelding racing fiercely throughout. Mr Taylor put this down to a recent gear change with the horse over-reacting with full blinds on. He further added that he had attempted to pull back to take cover in the running line near the 1300 metres when a brief opportunity arose however he was unable to do this due to the horse's manners. Stewards reminded Mr Taylor of his obligations in that he would be expected to be more decisive given similar circumstances in the future.
NICKY JAY - over-raced middle stages.
Race 4   MANAWATU HARNESS HERE 18 NOVEMBER MOBILE PACE
PLAY BY EAR - broke rounding the first turn when leading after jumping several shadows and settled in midfield.
MANHATTAN SUNSHINE - raced clear in the lead during the middle stages. Driver P Fleming was spoken to advisedly for using his whip free of the rein on one occasion approaching the 400 metres. Weakened over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the tactics he adopted Mr Fleming advised after PLAY BY EAR broke on the first bend it gave him the chance to set a strong tempo which had suited his runner previously when driven in this manner. He further added that the mare had been working well leading into today's event and that he was disappointed with the effort.
WAINGARO IDEAL - out of position at dispatch and placed on the unruly for future mobiles. Gave ground from the 800 metres. Underwent a post race veterinary examination which revealed no obvious abnormality. A warning was placed on the gelding's race performance.
MAYA ANGELOU - pulled hard in the score up and continued to over-race when being restrained approaching the first turn.
TICKING OVER - briefly hampered passing the 1700 metres by a breaking runner.
SILVER LADY - Driver B Towers was warned for using his whip with more than a wrist flicking motion. When spoken to regarding the perceived improved performance Trainer S Doody explained that he had changed the mare's training regime since her last start and was surprised by today's forward showing.
DRAMATIST - briefly hampered late in the score up.
Race 5   CENTRAL ENERGY TRUST PACE MOBILE PACE
GREATEST SHOWMAN - held up rounding the final turn by a weakening runner. Had difficulty obtaining clear running until inside the final 100 metres.
SHEZSOMETHINSPECIAL - raced wide from the 1000 metres.
HAMPTON - raced three wide early before being restrained to the rear.
MAC'S TOMADO - paced roughly at various stages throughout. Commenced to weaken rounding the final turn.
RAKE - held up for clear racing room in the middle stages of the run home.
CHA CHA B - broke approaching the 250 metres losing its chance. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners.
AMERICAN ME - out of position at the start with Driver A Pyers issued a warning. Raced wide with cover from the 1000 metres. Mr Pyers defended a charge under Rule 869(2) and the Whip and Rein Regulations in that he used his whip with more than a wrist flicking motion from the 400 metres. After viewing the replays and hearing the evidence, the Adjudicative Committee upheld the charge and suspended Mr Pyers driver's licence from the conclusion of racing on 8 November up to and including 9 December (4 days). Stewards opened and adjourned an investigation into Mr Pyers' conduct at the conclusion of this inquiry.
