The start was delayed due to ARCHIE contacting the barrier strand despite the efforts of driver A Cameron. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding.

ARCHIE - raced wide early. Weakened passing the 700m hampering trailing runners. Struck track markers rounding the final bend. Driver C Dalgety was issued a $100 Minor Infringement Notice. When questioned regarding the performance Mr Dalgety advised that after working hard early to obtain the lead and being unable to gain respite in the middle stages due to TOUCH N GO over-racing in the parked position the effort had taken its toll. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

STYLE COUNCIL - driver K Cameron was questioned regarding the manner in which he drove near the 2100m when shifting inwards to a position four back on the fence. Mr Cameron advised that after initially shifting outwards he was concerned that he would be left to race parked when MICHAEL EYRE was attempting to shift inwards when racing in the parked position. After viewing the replays and hearing Mr Cameron's explanation, Stewards were satisfied that his actions were not unreasonable.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed a high heart rate and slow recovery.

When questioned regarding the improved performance trainer A Washington advised the mare had been racing without luck in recent starts and had received an economical run throughout. Driver R Close was issued a charge under Rule 869(2) and the Whip and Rein Regulations in that he used his whip with more than a wrist flicking motion in the run home with the hearing being adjourned to the NZ Metropolitan TC meeting on 23 August due to Mr Close having left the course.

Stewards lodged a protest against 4th placing being awarded under Rule 870(5) alleging the gelding was lapped on at the finish by U R THE ONE and BIG MAMA MORRIS. The connections did not contest the protest and STAR MAGIC was relegated to 6th placing.

Driver R Holmes defended a breach of Rule 869(3)(b) alleging he drove carelessly when shifting outwards near the 500m checking HENRY WINKLER and AMAZING TOM with AMAZING TOM breaking and losing all chance. After viewing the replays and hearing evidence from Stewards and Mr Holmes, the Adjudicative Committee found the charge proved and Mr Holmes' driver's licence was suspended from the conclusion of racing today up to and including 9 February 2024 (4 days).
