A false start was declared when THE RIVER BOY refused to take up its position and KNOWING ME charged the barrier strand. THE RIVER BOY was sent to the Unruly position for the restart where the gelding will remain for future standing starts. A warning was placed on the barrier record of KNOWING ME.

Stewards questioned driver P Nairn regarding the tactics he adopted in the middle stages when electing not to shift wider on the track near the 1400m prior to being covered by an improving runner. Mr Nairn advised the gelding had trotted roughly and broken in previous starts on the track and for this reason he was reluctant to improve to the parked position due to the prevailing track conditions with a considerable distance still remaining until the finish. Stewards noted Mr Nairn's comments.

The start was delayed after the horses had commenced coming out of the pre-race formation when there was a gear issue with ONE EL resulting in the horses which had scored up being positioned close to the gate when having to wait for ONE EL. A false start was then declared after ASPIRATIONAL DREAM broke late in the score up and shifted outwards inconveniencing an outside runner. Driver J Morrison elected to remain in his allocated barrier position for the restart.

Driver B Orange admitted a breach of Rule 869(3)(b) in that he drove carelessly in this incident and after viewing the replays and hearing submissions on penalty the Adjudicative Committee imposed a fine of $300.
