Over-raced for a distance approaching the 800m before becoming under pressure from the 600m, weakening late in the run home. Stewards questioned driver A Butt regarding the circumstances in which he was unable to maintain the trailing position entering the first bend. Mr Butt advised that despite his urgings, the filly had failed to muster sufficient speed to hold the position, which he attributed to the genuine early tempo of the race. After considering Mr Butt's explanation, which was supported by Stewards' own observations, Stewards were satisfied that he had taken reasonable measures to maintain the trailing position and that the filly's failure to do so was not attributable to any lack of effort on his part. Accordingly, no further action was deemed necessary. Mr Butt was further questioned regarding the performance of the filly, Mr Butt stated that the filly had locked onto the outside rein over the concluding stages losing ground and, in his opinion had been disappointing. Trainer M Jones advised that the filly would now be sent for a spell.

In determining this course of action, Stewards were mindful that RENEGADE was the winner of the event and that the failure to activate the hopple shorteners did not materially disadvantage the gelding.

POSEIDON - Stewards questioned driver G Smith regarding his decision not to utilise all available means to urge the gelding over the concluding stages, in particular his decision not to apply the whip. Mr Smith explained that, in his opinion, the gelding was giving its best effort while being driven with the reins and that, based on previous experience, it had resented being urged with the whip. He further stated that, given the vigour with which he was driving the gelding with the reins and his belief that it was already performing to its maximum, the use of the whip would not have improved its finishing effort. After considering Mr Smith's explanation together with their own observations, Stewards were satisfied that he had driven the gelding out in a competitive manner throughout the home straight. Mr Smith was further questioned regarding the necessity of carrying a whip if it was not intended to be used, noting that drivers are expected to utilise all available means, where appropriate, to obtain the best possible finishing position. Following discussion, it was agreed that a gear change would be implemented so that there would no longer be a whip carried in future starts. In addition, the gelding will race with the addition of removable deafeners.
CARRERA BRAVO - weakened from the 600m hampering a trailing runner. When questioned regarding the performance, co-trainer T White advised he was disappointed with the gelding's effort .Mr White explained that the gelding was having its first race start following a considerable spell from racing and, in his opinion, would derive significant benefit in terms of fitness from tonight's outing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Shifted up the track prior to exiting the final bend when junior driver S Hill activated the removable deafeners. Mr Hill was issued a warning for his lack of control when activating gear.
OLYMPIAN - raced fiercely approaching the 1300m and proved difficult to restrain. Due to the gelding's racing manners, driver J Cox was obligated to shift the runner wider on the track for safety reasons, resulting in ROSARIO being forced to race in a three-wide position for a brief period. The gelding continued to over-race for a considerable distance thereafter, causing Mr Cox ongoing difficulty in restraining and settling the runner. In view of its racing manners, the gelding was stood down to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion prior to resuming. Mr Cox advised Stewards that the gelding would now be sent for a spell before resuming its preparation.
