Race Comments

Race 1   THE WATCHU WAY TROT
GRACE N ELEGANCE - held up for clear running until near the 50m.
MAZEPPA - broke at the start losing ground. Driver L Chin was shown the replay of the final stages and questioned regarding the manner in which he drove when clear in the lead. Dr Chin stated that he had been mindful that MAZEPPA had lost ground early before working forward to lead and had then received midrace pressure when challenged by COOL PHELAN and felt that the gelding was doing its best so had been reluctant to place this runner under undue pressure. Dr Chin further stated that he had looked to the outside on several occasions and had shown vigour in driving the gelding out once BARSUKOV came into view when finishing strongly down the outer. Stewards were satisfied that the manner in which Dr Chin drove was not so unreasonable given the circumstances as to be culpable and took the matter no further.
SONSOFTHEMERCH - held up early and middle stages of the run home when in restricted room.
FERDINAND - late scratching at 9.30am on veterinary advice.
COOL PHELAN - unsuccessfully contested for the lead middle stages.

When questioned regarding the deafeners being out prior to the commencement of the score up Driver C Sharpe explained that he had been instructed to activate the deafeners to assist in an attempt to lead over the early stages however the gelding had been unable to muster sufficient speed to find the front.
CRISTIANO BUCCINI - broke early in the score up but was in position prior to the candy pole.
BENJAMIN BUTTON - when questioned regarding the performance Driver W Frost could offer no explanation for the disappointing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
