Race 1   OFF THE TRACK FOOD AND BEV HANDICAP TROT
TOPAZ CASTLETON - switched to a pace shortly after the start then galloped losing ground. Broke again rounding the final turn losing all chance. Stood down pending a satisfactory trial.
KAIPAKI JACK - shied at the winning post on the first occasion shifting up the track despite the efforts of Driver P Ferguson. Broke approaching the 50m and failed to settle. Stewards lodged a protest against 4th placing being awarded to this runner under Rule 870(3) and the Breaking Horses Regulation alleging the gelding had broken in excess of 50m inside the final 200m. Connections contested the protest and after viewing the replays and hearing evidence from all parties, the Adjudicative Committee upheld the protest and disqualified KAIPAKI JACK.
CHESINOV - broke shortly after the start losing all chance.
PRETTY PETITE - broke near the 1800m losing all chance.
JEWEL ELLERY - broke at the start losing considerable ground. Stood down for standing starts pending a satisfactory trial. Weakened from the 600m.
MR MONTY - broke at the start losing all chance and was retired from the event.
HELSINGOR - hampered by a breaking runner entering the first turn. Lay out and broke near the 600m losing all chance. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners.
PATRICK MAHOMES - Co-trainers P & V Blanchard were warned for the late notification of removable deafeners instead of fixed deafeners.
Race 2   WATCHU SECURITY MOBILE PACE
There was a 3 minute delay to the start due to the protest in Race 1.
CLAUDIA SCHIFFER - Driver K Hall was shown the replays and warned regarding the manner in which he used his whip in the run home.
BENJAMIN BUTTON - lay out in the score up and was back from position at dispatch. A warning was placed on the gelding's barrier manners. Slow early stages. Driver J Kriechbaumer, assisted by Trainer S Abernethy, was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted in the middle stages when electing not to shift out into an available position three back in the running line until near the 750m. Mr Kriechbaumer stated that he had been driving to instructions and felt he had saved ground by not shifting out earlier. Mr Abernethy confirmed that he had given instructions to Mr Kriechbaumer that this runner was best suited when saved for one run and ideally when that was between other horses. He further stated that it was his intention to drive the gelding in this manner where possible in the future. After considering the evidence Stewards took the matter no further other than to note the respective explanations.
JACCKA COOPER - raced wide early before improving to lead near the 1600m.
LOUIE V TONNE - raced erratically entering the first turn shifting wider on the track. Broke near the 1500m after contacting the sulky of BENJAMIN BUTTON, despite the efforts of Driver A Sharpe, losing considerable ground. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners. Mr Sharpe advised that he would be recommending gear changes to connections.
Race 3   MVS EQUINE MOBILE PACE
GWENDOLINE MARY - checked and broke approaching the 100m losing all chance.
GIMMESOMELOVIN - weakened from the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
BIGGER THE BETTOR - shifted outwards passing the 100m checking GWENDOLINE MARY which broke losing all chance with resultant interference to LINCOLN COVE and MICKY WADE. Driver D Ferguson admitted a charge under Rule 869(3)(b) in that he drove carelessly in this incident. After viewing the replays and hearing penalty submissions, the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Ferguson driver's licence from the conclusion of racing tonight up to and including 15 March 2024 (3 days).
MICKY WADE - checked near the 100m.
LINCOLN COVE - raced wide in the early stages. Broke near the 200m but soon settled. Checked near the 100m.
Race 4   EMILY JOHNSON 21 TODAY HANDICAP TROT
MAZEPPA - swung outwards at the start and was slow to begin.
WISH FOR FISH - trotted roughly entering the first turn. Driver T Hanara was warned for using her whip with more than a wrist flicking motion in the run home.
SONSOFTHEMERCH - trotted roughly late in the run home and could not be driven out. Authorisation of 3rd placing was withheld until Stewards were satisfied that the gelding was in its proper gait on reaching the finishing line.
FLYING SCOTSMAN - raced keenly middle stages.
SLAINTE - hampered and broke shortly after the start losing ground. Broke near the 100m.
LUBY LILL - broke shortly after the start hampering a trailing runner and lost considerable ground.
Race 5   DUNSTAN HORSEFEEDS BAY OF PLENTY CUP HCP PACE
BET WEST - hampered by a breaking runner near the 900m.
BAD MEDICINE - hampered by a breaking runner near the 900m.
D J ROCK - broke near the 900m hampering trailing runners and raced over a number of track markers when being restrained to the rear. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners.
NEW YORK MINUTE - swung inwards at the start then broke losing ground.
FERNLEIGH CASH - over-raced middle stages when outside the leader. Junior Driver K Denifostova, assisted by J Abernethy, admitted a charge under Rule 869(4)(6)(b)(c) in that she shifted out near the 1600m forcing MIKI SHAN wider on the track. After viewing the replays and hearing penalty submissions the Adjudicative Committee imposed a fine of $200.
MIKI SHAN - Driver M McKendry was warned for using his whip free of the rein on one occasion in the run home.
DONTSTOPMENOW - broke at the start losing considerable ground.
Race 6   GAVELHOUSE.COM BOP COUNTRY HANDICAP TROT
JOHNNY WHO - checked and broke passing the 75m.
RUBY RIDGE - hampered by a breaking runner passing the 550m.
JOCA'S HILL - raced wide early stages.
FAITH IN MANCHESTER - broke rounding the final turn losing all chance.
DEL SHANNON - raced wide early stages. Broke passing the 550m hampering a trailing runner and lost all chance.
CASTANA - shifted in marginally passing the 75m, despite the efforts of Driver B Butcher, checking an inside runner.
JASINOVA - broke shortly after the start losing considerable ground.
Race 7   HIDDEN LAKE HOTEL AND APARTMENTS MOBILE PACE
HAIL LUCIUS - raced keenly middle stages.
IRISH WHISPERS - when questioned regarding the driving tactics adopted Junior Driver Z Meredith, assisted by P Brown, stated that it had been decided to go back from the wide barrier draw at the start and look for a trail into the race in what was the gelding's first run back from a lengthy spell. Mr Meredith further explained that this had not eventuated so he had elected to improve along the markers rounding the final turn and was satisfied with the manner in which this runner finished the event off. Mr Brown confirmed the instructions to go back early given the gate speed drawn to the inside and advised that he would expect the gelding to derive benefit from the first up run.
MARGHERITA - raced wide early. The near side number became detached during the middle stages and hung down for the remainder.
Race 8   NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS TICKETS ON SALE NOW MOBILE PACE
LUKA DONCIC - shifted out rounding the final turn despite the efforts of Driver D Ferguson.
OCEANIC ART - weakened final turn.
BUGALUGS - Driver L Hollis was issued a warning for using his whip with more than a wrist flicking motion in the run home.
PETER FORSBERG - over-raced middle stages.
