Race 1   APPARELMASTER/FRESHCHOICE TROT
JUST RICKY - fractious prior to the start.
DIEDRE FRANCO - Driver G Thornley reported she was unable to fully drive the mare out in the run home due to it trotting roughly.
BIG AL - trotted roughly passing the 1100m. Raced greenly near the 500m when being shifted wider on the track by an inside runner. Again trotted roughly rounding the final bend when weakening.
SPIRITINTHESKY - lay outwards through the middle stages before weakening from the 500m. When questioned regarding the performance driver T Williams advised the filly had raced lethargically throughout and he was disappointed with the effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.
BELLA LINDENNY - Driver B Orange reported he did not activate the removable deafeners due to the filly trotting roughly in the run home.
ROSE ISLE - Driver J Curtin momentarily dropped his whip passing the 100m.
SOLEMN SON - raced wide early. Trotted roughly at various stages throughout. Weakened from the 700m. A warning was placed on the racing performance of the gelding. Lay inwards near the 500m striking track markers.
KING OF DIAMONDS - slow to begin.
EASY MCCARTNEY - slow to begin. Broke racing into the first bend losing considerable ground.
Race 2   SIKA PACE
The start was delayed due to I SPY DIAMONDS rearing with driver S O'Reilly being dislodged from her sulky. Miss O'Reilly was unharmed in this incident. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the filly.
The start was further delayed when MY SKATJIE was fractious and refused to turn into line requiring assistance from the starting personnel. A final warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding
MY SKATJIE - Driver C Markham was warned for using his whip free of the rein in the run home.
VITORIA - weakened from the 400m.
MOUTON CADET - broke at the start losing ground. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Broke again rounding the first bend losing all chance. Stood down to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion prior to resuming.
I SPY DIAMONDS - paced roughly over the concluding stages.
THE TOWN OF LIGHT - weakened from the 400m.
LUCKY MONEY - weakened from the 400m.
IFYOUCOULDCWHATIC - broke after 100m losing all chance. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding.
MEMORIES N HEAVEN - lay outwards throughout the run home. Cleared from the Unruly for future standing starts.
Race 3   NEW WORLD WESTPORT PACE
KINK - slow to begin. Broke after 100m hampering a trailing runner and losing all chance. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding.
ULTIMATE COUNSEL - over-raced in the early stages when being restrained to take a trail.
MAPUA MISSIE - broke shortly after the start hampering a trailing runner and losing considerable ground. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the mare. Lay inwards and struck a track marker near the 1100m. Trainer K Cameron advised he would be making gear changes prior to the mare racing next.
CORZIN HAVICK - hampered by a breaking runner at the start. Again hampered by a breaking runner after 100m losing ground. Driver H Sail was warned for using his whip with more than a wrist flicking motion early in the run home.
EYES TO HEAVEN - Driver B Borcoskie was warned for using his whip with more than a wrist flicking motion in the run home.
Race 4   TRT BUILDERS MOBILE PACE
MY SWEET BELLA ROSE - driver R Close admitted a breach of Rule 869(3)(b) in that he drove carelessly near the 150m when shifting ground outwards abruptly resulting in IGETAKICKOUTOFYOU being checked. After viewing replays and considering submissions on penalty, the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Close's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing on 1 January up to and including 6 January 2024 (3 days).
AMALFI - crowded by an outside runner shortly after the start having to be steadied. Paced roughly in the early stages.
AR GEE RULZ - lay inwards and paced roughly shortly after the start crowding an inside runner. Broke when racing over the crossing near the 2100m hampering a trailing runner and losing ground. Lay outwards rounding the final bend hampering an outside runner. Weakened from the 300m. Stood down to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion prior to resuming. Connections advised the gelding would be sent for a spell.
HONEST LIES - paced roughly rounding the final bend losing ground.
JUST ASK PADDY - hampered by a breaking runner near the 2100m.
FLOSSY REIGN - raced wide early. Again raced wide for a distance passing the 1700m before being restrained to the rear of the field. Hampered rounding the final bend when an inside runner lay outwards. Weakened from the 300m.
IGETAKICKOUTOFYOU - paced roughly leaving the final bend. Checked by MY SWEET BELLA ROSE which shifted ground outwards abruptly near the 150m.
Race 5   FULLER TOOLS HANDICAP TROT
OUR PEGASUS PEARL - trotted roughly racing into the first bend. Held up early and middle stages of the run home. Authorisation of placings was withheld after driver D Morrison requested to view the replays of the run home alleging interference to his runner by GINAS MAJESTY placed 3rd. After viewing all available replays, Mr Morrison elected not to proceed with a protest and the All Clear was given.
VINCENZO - driver B Borcoskie admitted a breach of the Push Out Rule 869(4)(6)(b)(c) in that he shifted ground outwards near the 1050m forcing GINAS MAJESTY wider on the track. After hearing submissions on penalty, the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Borcoskie's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing on 7 January up to and including 14 January 2024 (2 days).
LOVE WALKED IN - connections advised the mare would race without front shoes. Broke shortly after the start losing all chance. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the mare.
GINAS MAJESTY - forced to race wider on the track near the 1050m when an inside runner shifted ground outwards.
PATRICK SWAYZE - began awkwardly. Weakened from the 500m.
GAZZA BEATT - Stewards questioned driver A Tomlinson regarding her apparent lack of vigor in the run home. After hearing Mrs Tomlinson's explanation, Stewards issued a charge under Rule 868(3), which Mrs Tomlinson defended, alleging that she failed to drive the gelding out to the end of the race when there was a reasonable chance of finishing in 1st placing. After viewing replays and hearing evidence from all parties, the Adjudicative Committee dismissed the charge. When questioned regarding the improved performance connections advised the gelding had worked well in trackwork leading into today's race since returning from a spell. They added that the horse had overcome a recent infection and had benefitted from several gear changes.
HERE COMES JANE - broke shortly after the start losing all chance.
STEELINTHEHEEL - trotted roughly rounding the first bend losing ground. Broke passing the 400m losing all chance. A warning was placed on the racing record of the filly.
Race 6   BRADLEY'S FURNITURE PACE
A false start was declared due to RITA becoming fractious and charging the barrier strand despite the efforts of driver T Williams. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the mare.
EBURY STREET - paced roughly early. Driver H Sail reported he was unable to fully activate the removable deafeners due to the cord breaking.
SAILOR BOY - Stewards investigated a possible breach of the Push Out Rule after 300m when S Ottley (SAILOR BOY) shifted ground outwards while racing to the inside of WEBS REACTOR. After viewing the replays, it was established that WEBS REACTOR had been racing wider on the track when being restrained and had not been forced outwards by SAILOR BOY with no further action required.
WEBS REACTOR - raced wide early. Weakened from the 500m. A warning was placed on the racing performance of the gelding.
RITA - weakened from the 300m.
JIMMY ARMA - when questioned regarding the performance driver J Dunn advised he was disappointed with the effort of the gelding and could offer no explanation.
TEN DA TOUCH - broke briefly at the start losing ground.
Race 7   CALTEX DURBAN CHIEF WESTPORT TROTTERS CUP (HCP TROT)
ANNA'S BOY - held up leaving the final bend.
BOYZ INVASION - broke shortly after the start losing ground.
SON OF PATRICK - broke at the start losing ground.
TU TANGATA - broke at the start losing ground. Stewards questioned driver P Nairn regarding his apparent lack of vigour until late in the run home. After hearing Mr Nairn's explanation Stewards issued a charge under Rule 868(2), which Mr Nairn defended, alleging that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure his runner was given full opportunity to win the race by failing to show sufficient vigour in the run home when there was a reasonable chance of finishing in 1st placing. After viewing replays and hearing evidence from all parties, the Adjudicative Committee found the charge proved and suspended Mr Nairn's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing on 30 December up to and including 21 January 2024 (7 days).
MASTERLY - hampered by a breaking runner near the 300m. Lay inwards and struck several track markers near the 250m.
UNICO VACANZA - broke near the 300m hampering a trailing runner and was taken to the inside of track markers by driver J Dunn losing all chance.
Race 8   MARTINS MITRE 10 PAT SCANLON MEMORIAL TROT
TOM BRADY - fractious prior to the start causing a delay. Placed on the Unruly for future standing starts. Broke racing into the first bend hampering trailing runners before shifting outwards abruptly and locking sulky wheels with TAKE AFTER ME which was severely checked. Broke again near the 250m losing all chance. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding.
TARUKENGA - trotted roughly in the early stages. Hampered by a breaking runner racing into the first bend. When questioned regarding the improved performance connections advised the mare had shown natural improvement since returning from a long spell and had appreciated an economical run close to the pace today.
MURANO - driver T Williams reported he did not activate the removable deafeners due to the cord breaking.
SUPERFAST GORSEY - driver G Thornley was warned for using her whip with more than a wrist flicking motion in the run home.
REINDEER TROUBLE - hampered by a breaking runner racing into the first bend. Hung inwards throughout causing driver J Curtin some difficulty.
OPAWA PEAK - broke at the start losing all chance.
GOTTA TICKET - broke briefly at the start. Hampered by a breaking runner racing into the first bend. Weakened from the 500m.
TAKE AFTER ME - severely checked when locking sulky wheels with TOM BRADY racing into the first bend. Broke and switched to a pace near the 400m losing all chance. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding.
MAKE MY DAY - slow in the early stages losing ground. Driver K Gill was warned to ensure she starts wider on the track when drawn Unruly.
Race 9   BERNIE STEWART WESTPORT HANDICAP PACE
ITSAMONEYMAKER - over-raced middle stages. Driver J Dunn was warned for using his whip with a foot removed from the sulky footrest in the early stages.
DANCE WITH THE BOSS - paced roughly near the 100m.
Race 10   DICK & PAM PARKER MEMORIAL MOBILE PACE
BUDDY REIGN - weakened leaving the final bend.
MELANDO CHIEF - lay outwards leaving the final bend and shifted up the track despite the efforts of driver T Williams.
TREMENDOUS LOVER - the boring pole was removed prior to the start due to the gelding warming up unfavourably.
RHYME N REASON - over-raced and broke near the 1700m losing considerable ground. Broke again when weakening leaving the final bend losing all chance and was retired from the race. A warning was placed on the racing record of the mare.
PHILADELPHIA FILLY - over-raced passing the 1400m when being restrained to obtain cover. Held up early in the run home.
Race 11   WATTYL MOBILE PACE
FLO MOTION - compounded from the 600m. Stewards questioned junior driver S Thornley, who declined the assistance of a senior driver, regarding the tactics he adopted during the race, in particular when electing to shift away from the trailing position near the 1100m before applying significant pressure to the mare in an attempt to regain the lead resulting in the horse compounding from the 600m. After hearing Mr Thornley's explanation Stewards issued a charge under Rule 868(2), which Mr Thornley admitted, in that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure FLO MOTION finished in the best possible position. After viewing replays and hearing submissions on penalty, the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Thornley's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing on 29 December up to and including 7 January 2024 (6 days).
EDDIE JAMES - over-raced when being restrained to take cover near the 2100m. Raced wide from the 800m.
PEARL'S A SINGER - raced wide early. Weakened from the 500m.
KRYSTAL DELIGHT - held up early and middle stages of the run home.
RUBY'S A DELIGHT - over-raced in the middle stages.
FRANCO HOFFMAN - raced wide through the middle stages. Driver W House was warned for using his whip in a continuous manner in the run home.
SANTA KLAWS - broke in the score up and was back from the Unruly position at the start. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Weakened from the 500m.
HI HOPES - when questioned regarding the performance driver B Orange advised the filly had been challenged for the lead for a distance passing the 1100m and was unable to obtain any respite with the effort having taken its toll over the concluding stages.
