DRAGON BALL - hampered by an outside runner which shifted inwards in the early stages. Broke rounding the first bend hampering a trailing runner losing ground. Hung inwards crowding an inside runner and broke again near the 1100m when improving wide on the track and was restrained to the rear of the field. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding.

ORLANDO WISH - broke after 150m and shifted inwards abruptly inside the marker line despite the efforts of driver T Williams losing ground. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding. Authorisation of 4th placing was withheld until Stewards were satisfied the gelding had complied with the Breaking Horses Regulation in the early stages.

CARRERA BRAVO - shifted inwards after improving into the passing lane in the run home when driver S O'Reilly activated gear before being corrected. Miss O'Reilly was spoken to advisedly regarding this.

CARRERA BRAVO - when questioned regarding the performance, driver S O'Reilly advised that the gelding had been unsuited by the slow tempo and was unable to make ground when the pace increased significantly over the final 400 metres. Miss O'Reilly was further questioned as to why she had not elected to improve through the middle stages, given her assessment that the race was being run at a slow tempo. She explained that her instructions from co-trainer B White had been to restrain from the outside barrier and obtain cover before being presented for a run into the race however, this did not eventuate resulting in the gelding being caught flat-footed over the concluding stages when the pace quickened considerably. Stewards questioned Mr White regarding Miss O'Reilly's explanation. He confirmed that these were the instructions issued but acknowledged that, given the sedate tempo, it would have been beneficial for Miss O'Reilly to improve CARRERA BRAVO during the middle stages. He added that, when drawn toward the outside of the mobile in future, his intention would be to continue to instruct the driver to restrain during the early stages and seek a position with cover. After considering the explanations provided by Miss O'Reilly and Mr White, reviewing the betting information supplied by the Betting Analyst, and taking into account their own observations, Stewards advised Miss O'Reilly that better tactical judgement would be expected in similar circumstances in future.

When questioned regarding the performance, co-trainer T White advised he was disappointed with the gelding's effort .Mr White explained that the gelding was having its first race start following a considerable spell from racing and, in his opinion, would derive significant benefit in terms of fitness from tonight's outing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

POSEIDON - Stewards questioned driver G Smith regarding his decision not to utilise all available means to urge the gelding over the concluding stages, in particular his decision not to apply the whip. Mr Smith explained that, in his opinion, the gelding was giving its best effort while being driven with the reins and that, based on previous experience, it had resented being urged with the whip. He further stated that, given the vigour with which he was driving the gelding with the reins and his belief that it was already performing to its maximum, the use of the whip would not have improved its finishing effort. After considering Mr Smith's explanation together with their own observations, Stewards were satisfied that he had driven the gelding out in a competitive manner throughout the home straight. Mr Smith was further questioned regarding the necessity of carrying a whip if it was not intended to be used, noting that drivers are expected to utilise all available means, where appropriate, to obtain the best possible finishing position. Following discussion, it was agreed that a gear change would be implemented so that there would no longer be a whip carried in future starts. In addition, the gelding will race with the addition of removable deafeners.
