HE'S TOUGH - paced roughly passing the 1300m after becoming awkwardly placed close to the sulky wheel of LOVEYOURMOTHER which was racing in the two wide line on its outside. After questioning drivers M Maynard (HE'S TOUGH) and A Edge (LOVEYOURMOTHER) and viewing the films, it was established that the field ahead of these runners had shifted outwards simultaneously to the pace easing and that Mr Edge had maintained his line during this incident until shifting in marginally due to the pace easing. Stewards took the matter no further other than to remind Mr Edge of his obligations to ensure inside runners are not placed in restricted room in similar circumstances.

When questioned regarding this driver A Edge advised the mobile gate had shifted up the track just prior to the start leaving a gap between the barrier arm and the marker line and he was reluctant to come up into position in case the horse attempted to start ahead of the gate. After considering his explanation and viewing the replays, Stewards took the matter no further. Lay inwards at various stages during the running.

SECRET AGENT MAN - held up by a weakening runner final bend. Again held up in the middle stages of the run home. Stewards questioned driver N Williamson regarding his decision to shift wider on the track passing the 150m when clearance existed in the passing lane. Mr Williamson explained he was aware driver M Williamson (COMMANDER BEN) had only commenced to shift inwards near the 150m and he believed he would be blocked for clear racing room if he had continued with an attempt to gain a run in the passing lane. Mr Williamson added he then decided to shift outwards and had finished strongly once gaining clear running inside the final 100m. After considering his explanation and viewing the replays Stewards were satisfied his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances and took the matter no further.

The race was stopped by Stewards under Rule 211A(1) shortly after the start when CLONAKILTY shifted inwards and contacted ZOOM X with driver S Ottley being dislodged and the gelding escaping driverless for a short distance before being recaptured. Both horses were examined by the Veterinarian and cleared to take part in the re-run. Driver S Ottley was examined by St John personnel and cleared of injury. CLONAKILTY was sent to the unruly position by the Starter where the gelding will remain for future standing starts.

Stewards questioned drivers S Thornley (HUGO), G O'Reilly (TROUBLESHOOTER) and S Ottley (TACT TEENA) regarding this incident and after hearing their evidence issued Mr Thornley with a charge under Rule 869(3)(b) and the Shifting Ground Regulations alleging he drove carelessly when shifting outwards near the 400m checking TROUBLESHOOTER and TACT TEENA with TACT TEENA breaking and losing all chance. Mr Thornley (assisted by K Barron) defended the charge and after viewing the replays and hearing evidence from all parties, the Adjudicative Committee found the charge proved and Mr Thornley's driver's licence was suspended from the conclusion of racing on 25 April up to and including 30 April 2025 (2 days).
