THE BETTOR MAJOR - Stewards investigated a possible breach of the Push Out Rule near the 1500m when THE BETTOR MAJOR raced wider on the track. After viewing the replays it was established that THE COALMAN had shifted wider prior to THE BETTOR MAJOR reaching its sulky wheel and no further action was deemed necessary.

HANOI FRANCO - underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Hung inwards throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slightly dehydrated and showing signs of a seasonal complaint. Stood down pending a veterinary clearance prior to resuming. Trainer P Shennan advised the mare will be sent for a spell.

ZOOM X - weakened from the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards questioned driver M Jones regarding his tactics during the running. Mr Jones advised he elected to challenge MIKI'S COURAGE for the lead rounding the first bend in an attempt to obtain a position on the marker line, from which he could then restrain and obtain cover, as he felt the gelding would be unsuited to racing parked. Mr Jones added that when it became apparent racing into the back straight on the first occasion that he would be unable to cross, he desisted from his challenge and steadied the gelding. Mr Jones further stated that despite the early work he was disappointed with the gelding's effort. After considering his explanation and the distance over which Mr Jones challenged for the lead, Stewards were satisfied his tactics were not unreasonable in the circumstances and took the matter no further.

Stewards lodged a protest against 1st placing being awarded under Rule 870(4)(d) alleging the gelding had failed to lose ground when in a break at the start and had gained an advantage. After viewing the replays and hearing evidence from Stewards and junior driver S Hill (assisted by M Williamson) the Adjudicative Committee dismissed the protest. Mr Hill was advised to make a greater effort to restrain his breaking runner.

WAIKAKA - broke racing into the first bend after jumping a shadow hampering trailing runners losing ground. Over-raced middle stages. Paced roughly near the 900m and was taken wider on the track before being eased down. When questioned regarding the performance driver C Thornley advised the gelding may have choked down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. A final warning was placed on the racing record of the horse. Mr Thornley advised he would be recommending a shadow roll be applied to the gelding's gear for future starts.

A warning was also placed on the racing record of the gelding. Driver C Thornley advised he had steering difficulties and would be recommending gear changes prior to racing next.
