SPIRIT DOWNUNDER - over-raced when racing in the parked position through the early and middle stages. Held up early in the run home. Stewards questioned driver C Ferguson regarding the tactics he adopted near the 900m when electing to shift down to the marker line as opposed to remaining in the one one position. Mr Ferguson explained that he felt that his best option was to shift inwards and follow ROCKINGOOD and DEADLINE who were both favoured runners rather than remain in the one out line following NICKEL AND DIME which had improved quickly to race in the parked position through the middle stages as this would have resulted in him having to improve wide on the final bend. After considering the matter, Stewards were satisfied that Mr Ferguson's tactics were not unreasonable in the circumstances and took the matter no further.

CHEER THE CAPTAIN - when questioned regarding the performance driver T Williams advised he was not overly disappointed given it was the gelding's first start on a grass track and the horse failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Connections advised the gelding would be withdrawn from its engagement on the second day of the meeting on Sunday.

A post-race veterinary examination initially revealed no abnormalities however upon cooling down the gelding developed colic and was treated prior to being transported to the Canterbury Equine Clinic in the Horse Ambulance for further assessment. Stood down pending a veterinary clearance prior to resuming.

Stewards questioned drivers B Hope (ZARLINI) and S Ottley (DAWN TO DARK) regarding this incident where it was established that both runners had shifted ground simultaneously and jostled for a short distance in an attempt to obtain a position in the running line behind HUGO. After viewing the replays and considering both drivers explanation, Stewards were satisfied no one horse or driver was at fault and accordingly took the matter no further.
