ILLICIT LOVE - broke near the 1750m when racing to the inside of EYRE I WILL checking trailing runners and losing considerable ground. Stewards held an investigation into this incident and after hearing the relative evidence from Junior Driver C Hackett (ILLICIT LOVE) assisted by M Wallis, Driver S Abernethy (EYRE I WILL) and viewing the replays it was established that these runners had been contesting a position in the running line when racing on terms with neither driver being deemed to be at fault. Given the circumstances Stewards took the matter no further.

Stewards lodged a protest under Rule 870(5) against this runner's 3rd placing alleging the gelding was lapped on at the finish line. After viewing replays connections did not contest the protest and FEARLESS was relegated to 5th placing by the Stewards. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing manners.

Had to be steadied when there was an easing of the pace near the 900m. Authorisation of 3rd placing was withheld until Stewards were satisfied the gelding had complied with the Breaking Horses Regulation in the early stages.

A post-race veterinary examination and endoscopy confirmed a small amount of blood present in a nostril originating from a burst blood vessel with no other abnormalities detected.
