Driver S O'Reilly admitted a breach of Rule 869(3)(b) in that she drove carelessly near the 800m by shifting ground outwards when not entitled to resulting in her runner striking the sulky wheel of BUFFY NORTHSTAINS before breaking and locking wheels with BRIANNA with both runners losing ground. After viewing the replays and hearing evidence from Stewards and Miss O'Reilly, the Adjudicative Committee imposed a fine of $450.

A REASON TO FIGHT - over-raced middle stages. Hampered by a weakening runner for a distance passing the 800m before breaking near the 650m hampering trailing runners losing all chance. Stewards questioned driver R Close regarding this incident. Mr Close advised that his runner had been over-racing causing him difficulty and after being hampered by the weakening MILLIE LET LOOSE he had attempted to shift ground outwards however MILLIE LET LOOSE had hung outwards simultaneously to him shifting ground resulting in his runner being placed in restricted room. After viewing the replays and considering Mr Close's explanation Stewards took the matter no further.

THE RIVER BOY - weakened from the 700m and lay inwards and contacted several track markers. When questioned regarding the performance trainer/driver B Butt was unable to provide any explanation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a high heart rate and slow recovery. Mr Butt advised he will have blood tests taken from the gelding in the coming days and Stewards will follow up the results.

Stewards lodged a protest against 2nd placing being awarded under Rule 870(5) alleging the gelding was lapped on at the finish by MILES AWAY and ROYAL DEL. Connections did not contest the protest and JOHNNY TROTTER was relegated to 4th placing by Stewards. Stood down to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion prior to resuming.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed a high heart rate and slow recovery. Driver J Dunn reported he had difficulty restraining the filly after striking the sulky wheel discs in the early stages and felt his best option was to improve forward instead of risk the filly choking down.
