CAULFIELD - broke near the 450m when awkwardly placed to the outside wheel of MARIA KIRILENKO hampering a trailing runner losing its chance. Stewards spoke with driver J Darby in relation to this incident where it was established that CAULFIELD shifted outwards marginally at the same time as MARIA KIRILENKO shifted inwards. As a result of the simultaneous movement of both runners, CAULFIELD became awkwardly positioned and raced across the sulky wheel of MARIA KIRILENKO. This caused CAULFIELD to become unbalanced and break gait with the matter being taken no further other than to note the circumstances.

MAJOR HENRY - broke at the start losing ground. Stewards investigated a possible breach of the Push Out Rule near the 1600m when MAJOR HENRY shifted outwards with ARCHIE racing wider on the track. After speaking with junior driver R Harrison (assisted by J Dunn) and viewing the replays it was established that several runners had been racing loosely and as the replays were inconclusive no further action was taken. Notwithstanding this Miss Harrison was reminded of her obligations when shifting ground.

Mrs Negus advised she had been unable to activate the hopple shorteners after becoming entangled.

When questioned regarding the performance and the tactics he adopted in the early stages when contesting for the lead, co-trainer/driver S Iremonger advised that due to recent performances and a better draw today, he elected to attempt to race in a more forward position however when he was unable to obtain the lead the horse had commenced to over-race with the effort taking its toll. After considering his explanation and the distance he had challenged for the lead which was not excessive, Stewards took the matter no further other than to remind Mr Iremonger not to drive in a manner which could leave him open to query. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery and lameness in the right front leg. Stood down pending a veterinary clearance prior to resuming.

POISON IVY - over-raced when being restrained to obtain cover for a distance passing the 1400m. Continued to over-race placing driver O Thornley in some difficulty and as a result made contact with the back of the sulky of LARISSA BEAUDIENE and broke before falling near the 600m dislodging driver O Thornley checking SHADOW CREEK, HERE COMES MARTY, DOVER TERRACE and JOHN STEWART with driver M Williamson being dislodged from the sulky of JOHN STEWART. POISON IVY escaped driverless before being recaptured and was transported from the track in the Horse Ambulance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a head injury with the mare being treated before being referred to the Canterbury Equine Clinic for further assessment. Stood down pending a veterinary clearance prior to completing one trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before resuming. Driver O Thornley was examined by St John personnel and cleared of injury to fulfill her remaining driving engagement.

DO YOU WANNA DANCE - held up throughout the run home. Driver G Smith advised he did not activate the removable gear in consequence. When questioned regarding his decision not to take the run available in the passing lane Mr Smith advised he believed that STYLISH LUSTRE would take this run and that the leader HERE COMES MARTY had been laying outwards under pressure which he felt would provide him with clear racing room however this did not eventuate resulting in him being held up. After viewing the replays Stewards were satisfied his explanation was not unreasonable in the circumstances and took the matter no further.
