TUGAWAR - permission was given for a rein burr to be removed prior to the start with the gelding then requiring assistance from an attendant. Slow to score up but was in position at the candy pole. A final warning was placed on this runner's barrier manners. Paced roughly at the start then again entering the first turn. Weakened final turn. Trainer I Brownlee advised Stewards that the gelding would not compete in an amateur race again in the future. When questioned regarding the tactics he adopted during the middle stages Driver J Brownlee advised that TUGAWAR had commenced to over-race when he initially attempted to restrain to look to take a trail on DESERT DAWN so felt it was his best option to not persist with attempting to surrender the position as he was concerned that the gelding may become fierce and choke down. Stewards noted Mr Brownlee's comments and the performance.

Continued to over-race from the 900m before contacting several track markers near the 750m. When questioned Driver M White advised that he had been placed at a disadvantage with the mare over-racing with Stewards taking the matter no further.

MIKE ROSS - Stewards investigated a possible breach of the Push Out Rule entering the first turn when MIKE ROSS raced wider on the track after CHANGE TACT shifted out from the marker line. After viewing the replays it was established that Driver T Herlihy (CHANGE TACT) had commenced his outward movement prior to MIKE ROSS (P Ferguson) reaching his sulky wheel and no further action was deemed necessary. Briefly placed in restricted room leaving the final turn.

When being corrected, this runner became awkwardly placed close to the over-racing DIXIELAND DELIGHT which was improving to its inside despite the efforts of Driver A Poutama resulting in the contact occurring. After viewing the replays and hearing from Driver J Dickie (ADJOURNMENT), Stewards determined that no further action was required other than to note the circumstances.

The race was stopped by Stewards acting under to Rule 211(A)(1)&(2) after DREAMS OF ERIC shied and broke shortly after the start before falling to the track severely checking IRISH WHISPERS, NELSON'S BOY and FRANCO MIKI with driver D Butcher being tipped from the sulky. DREAMS OF ERIC was immediately attended to by the on course Veterinarian before being transported from the track via the Horse Ambulance. The colt underwent a further examination which revealed superficial abrasions to both knees and the near hind. DREAMS OF ERIC was subsequently stood down pending a satisfactory trial and a veterinary clearance before resuming. FRANCO MIKI also underwent a Veterinary examination which revealed a small laceration to the off fore. Driver A Poutama (DREAMS OF ERIC) was attended to by St John Ambulance staff before being transported to Waikato Hospital for further assessment. Driver D Butcher was examined by St John Ambulance staff and cleared of any significant injury. Stewards directed that the event be re-run following the late scratchings of FRANCO MIKI and DREAMS OF ERIC on veterinary advice given that the race had been stopped within the first 1000m with all remaining runners undergoing Veterinary examinations and being cleared to start.

IRISH WHISPERS - commenced to over-race leaving the back straight the final time and was then held up rounding the home turn before being hampered by the breaking OBADIAH DRAGON. When questioned Driver D Butcher stated the gelding had pulled hard during the running and had been unable to shift out from the marker line rounding the final turn before having considerable difficulty avoiding the breaking OBADIAH DRAGON losing momentum as a result. Mr Butcher further advised that his runner had then been unable to make up ground in the run home due to the fast closing sectional.
