The start was delayed at the first attempt when the field was turned out of line due to Starter D Blakemore not being satisfied with the manner in which the runners approached the barriers. The start was further delayed for approximately 8 minutes when REWIRI HILL became fractious and reared before landing in the sulky of HIGHVIEW ROCKN ROLL dislodging driver E Johnson who was uninjured. REWIRI HILL and HIGHVIEW ROCKN ROLL underwent veterinary examinations and were cleared to start. REWIRI HILL was sent to the unruly by the Starter for the restart.
