LIL WHIP - pre-race warmed. Broke near the 600m losing all chance. Stewards questioned Junior Driver E Johnson (AND REMEMBER ME) (assisted by T Mitchell), Drivers T Herlihy (LIL WHIP) and J Abernethy (HENRIK LUNDQVIST) regarding this incident. After viewing the replays and hearing the relative evidence Stewards could not solely attribute blame to any one horse or driver. Notwithstanding this Mr Herlihy and Mr Abernethy were reminded of their obligations given similar circumstances in the future. In considering this matter Stewards took into account that Mr Herlihy had been placed at a disadvantage after losing his safety glasses near the 1600m as well as the outward movement of HENRIK LUNDQVIST contributing to the incident.

KENNY HILL - broke near 120m and settled just short of the winning post. Stewards lodged a protest against this runner's 4th placing under Rule 870(3) and the Breaking Horses Regulation in that the gelding broke for more than 50m inside the final 200m. Connections did not contest the protest and KENNY HILL was disqualified by the Stewards. Stood down to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion prior to resuming.

JASINOVA - broke passing the 1850m losing ground. Authorisation of 4th placing was withheld until Stewards were satisfied the mare had complied with the Breaking Horses Regulation.
PANTANI - raced wide early before being restrained to the rear of the field. Hung inwards and trotted roughly rounding the final bend. Broke near the 250m hampering a trailing runner losing its chance. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding.
PANTANI - slow early. Lay in and trotted roughly rounding the final bend losing ground. Continued to lay in early stages of the run home. Stewards questioned Driver D Butcher regarding his driving tactics in the run home. Mr Butcher explained that the gelding was having its first start in seven months and had experienced difficulty negotiating the bends, particularly the final bend. He further stated that the gelding had galloped during a recent workout, which made him cautious about placing the horse under undue pressure until it had fully balanced up in the run to the finish.
