When questioned regarding her decision not to shift out to lead up the running line prior to being covered near the 1400m Junior Driver M Ranger (assisted by S Phelan) stated that she had been instructed to save the gelding for one run in what was its first race back from a lengthy spell. Ms Ranger further stated that after working early when able to improve wide she then felt her best option was to remain on the marker line rather than risk being caught without cover for the remainder of the event. Co-trainer S Phelan confirmed the instructions and advised that these were as a result of the gelding only performing moderately in a recent trial and expected that this runner would derive considerable benefit from the race. Stewards noted the respective comments.

IT AIN'T ME BABE - pre-raced warmed. Raced wide early. Stewards investigated an incident near the 2000m where IT AIN'T ME BABE was obliged to race three wide briefly when racing to the outside of BANGKOK BETTY. It was established that CON GRAZIA LOVE had sufficient room to improve to the inside of BANGKOK BETTY which meant that Driver J Abernethy had little option other than to follow MELSADELE when that runner shifted out into the running line which resulted in IT AIN'T ME BABE being caught three wide briefly. Given the circumstances no further action was deemed necessary.

Driver T Macfarlane admitted a charge under Rule 869(3)(b) in that he drove carelessly when shifting inwards entering the first turn when not sufficiently clear resulting in LUBY LILL being checked and breaking losing ground. After viewing the replays and hearing submissions on penalty the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Macfarlane's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing tonight up to and including 26 January 2024 (2 days).

When questioned regarding his decision not to shift out to lead up the running line near the 1200m prior to being covered by LIAISON, Driver P Ferguson stated that the mare had been performing well when driven with cover and saved for one final run so he felt it was his best option to remain on the marker line rather than race without cover. He further explained that after initially looking to shift outwards near the 400m he had steadied and shifted down to follow HALBERG however that runner was losing ground so he shifted back to the outside to attempt to secure clear running which did not eventuate for some distance. Stewards noted Mr Ferguson's comments.
