TOMMY LINCOLN - over raced middle stages when leading. Weakened final turn. Stewards questioned driver A Poutama regarding his handling of the gelding through the early and middle stages as to whether he would have been better served attempting to take a trail. Mr Poutama explained that he had been instructed to lead which he had been able to accomplish however the gelding began over racing and causing him some difficulty. He further added that it would have been his intention to accept a trail at some stage if the opportunity arose however on each occasion ONE CHANGE advanced to his outside his gelding took the bit and again raced keenly. Stewards questioned trainer R Green regarding the run of his gelding. Mr Green confirmed that he had instructed Mr Poutama to lead if possible however felt his horse had been undone over the final stages through over racing when challenged for the front. The comments of Mr Poutama and Mr Green were noted.
COPY THAT - held up on the final turn by a weakening runner. Stewards questioned driver D Butcher regarding his decision near the 1200 metres to vacate the one-one position and shift inwards to follow TOMMY LINCOLN. Mr Butcher explained that it had been his intention to go forward and challenge for the front near the 1300 metres however when ONE CHANGE had shifted him wider felt the complex of his race had changed. He further said that after working hard through the early stages his colt would have been unsuited to racing in parked position, or wide for some distance, and so believed it in his best interest to shift inwards and follow TOMMY LINCOLN, which was a horse he believed would get him to the passing the lane based on his previous experience driving the horse. Mr Butcher added that despite having to shift ground outwards at top of the straight his runner still had ample opportunity to run down AMAZING DREAM but was unable to do so. Mr Butchers comments were noted.
