SMOKE N REACTOR - held up passing the 600 metres by a weakening runner. Stewards questioned driver S Ottley regarding her decision not to improve outwards prior to the 600 metres. Miss Ottley advised that she elected not to improve three wide prior to THAT ALEXANDER GUY commencing its run in the back straight on the final occasion as she felt the parked CHRISTIAN WHO was still travelling well, however shortly afterwards CHRISTIAN WHO had been under considerable pressure and commenced to weaken resulting in her horse being held up. Miss Ottley added she was also mindful not to shift wider on the track due to runners progressing forward quickly three and four wide outside her. After considering Miss Ottley's explanation Stewards took the matter no further.

Stewards questioned driver S McNally regarding the manner he drove in the back straight on the final occasion when racing a cart width out from the marker line which enabled SMOKIN BY to improve to his inside near the 650 metres. Mr McNally explained that the horse had been hanging outwards in the straights and due to the gelding racing intractably on occasions in the past when being corrected, he attempted to allow the horse to race clear of the field without applying any undue pressure on the horse's mouth. Mr McNally added that once SMOKIN BY had shifted to his inside the gelding had failed to respond to his efforts to shift down the track and was obliged to race one out from that point.
