Race 9   JIM WRIGHT NISSAN MOBILE PACE

TURKISH TROUSERS - raced three wide early and middle stages before being restrained to the rear.
RED TERROR - improved forward three wide from the 1300m before unsuccessfully contesting for the lead until near the 900m. Commenced to weaken near the 600m and was then taken up the track to clear trailing runners before finishing distanced. Driver Z Butcher was questioned regarding the manner in which he drove during the middle stages. After hearing evidence from Mr Butcher the matter was adjourned to enable Stewards to make further enquiries. A post race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormality other than minor abrasions to the gelding's mouth.
Stewards have concluded their enquiry into the driving tactics adopted by Z Butcher (RED TERROR). When questioned Mr Butcher stated that after having enjoyed an economical run over the initial 800m he elected to improve forward three wide prior to being covered by BEAUDIENE EMERALD (A Harrison) to attempt to find the lead as RED TERROR had raced best when able to lead in the past and tended to hang badly when driven in behind. Mr Butcher further stated that he had briefly felt that Driver N Chilcott (ALLONBLACK) may hand up and had all but been in a position to cross to the markers prior to Ms Chilcott kicking up sufficiently to hold the position. Mr Butcher conceded that in hindsight he had persisted with the challenge for marginally too long but that he had then eased RED TERROR near the 900m so as to gain some respite before the gelding then appeared to lose interest near the 600m when lifting its head and commencing to get on one rein so he elected to ease RED TERROR up the track for safety reasons as he felt the gelding would have caused interference to other runners on the final bend.
Driver N Chilcott was questioned in relation to the matter and stated that when RED TERROR came forward inside the 1200m she had been reluctant to chase her mare up as it tends to over-race and felt that this may have resulted in Mr Butcher gaining the impression that the lead was available. Ms Chilcott further stated that Mr Butcher desisted with the challenge shortly after she indicated that she wasn't prepared to hand up.
Trainer S Dickson was also questioned and confirmed that RED TERROR had raced best since joining his stable when able to lead as the gelding tended to hang when in behind and drove better when able to lead. Accordingly he felt that Mr Butcher's decision to go forward near the 1300m in search of the lead was the best option at the time and was disappointed with the gelding's performance. Mr Dickson also advised that RED TERROR would be freshened prior to resuming.
After considering the matter and in particular RED TERROR's recent racing along with the relatively short duration of the challenge, Stewards decided to take the matter no further other than to remind Mr Butcher of his obligations with regard to not setting his drives too great of a task. Trainer S Dickson was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners record of RED TERROR.
