Race 1   CHARLES WIFFEN WINES & MT BEAUTIFUL WINES TROT
MOTU MOONDANCER - broke at the start.
MIDNIGHT MEMORIES - broke approaching the 2400 metres.
DESERT WINGS - held up in the early stages of the run home. Stewards questioned Junior driver L Lester as to why she had not improved her position near the 600 metres prior to becoming covered by the three wide line. Miss Lester explained that she had been left to race parked in the early stages and so was prepared to maintain a covered run for longer than usual. She added that the parked runner (GLOBAL FLIGHT) still appeared to be travelling well at that time and so felt it would be more beneficial to hold her position in the two wide line. After considering the matter her explanation was accepted.
WINDSOR - lay inwards and trotted roughly on the bend near the 1600 metres.
DREAMY NOTION - broke at the start.
CABELLA NOIR - broke after 100 metres.
MIDNIGHT ASSASSIN - Stewards questioned driver C DeFilippi regarding the manner he drove passing the 100 metres when his runner shifted outwards. This, combined with GLOBAL FLIGHT shifting inwards, enabled DESERT WINGS to gain clear running. Mr DeFilippi said his horse which was very inexperienced, lay inwards and then over-corrected shifting further than he anticipated. After reviewing the matter Stewards accepted that MIDNIGHT ASSASSIN had contributed to this incident but notwithstanding this advised Mr DeFilippi that a higher level of control was expected in future.
EXCITE - inconvenienced and broke near the 2000 metres. Again broke passing the 600 metres.
Race 2   RURAL LIVESTOCK & DALE TAYLOR SHEARING MOBILE PACE
MYTH OR REALITY - weakened final bend. Driver B Weaver reported he sustained a flat tyre entering the home straight.
ARDEN ROANOKE - over-raced through the middle stages and for a short distance passing the 1300 metres improved to the inside of the leader which had run outwards.
FRANCO NIVEN - lay outwards when leading through the straight on the first occasion. Lay outwards through the final straight. Driver J Dunn reported he did not activate the winner's sliding blinds or deafeners.
THE LAST STRAW - driver R Houghton admitted a breach of Rule 869(2) in that he used his whip on more occasions than permitted by Clause (b) of the Use of Whip Regulations. After submissions on penalty, the JCA suspended Mr Houghton's Horseman's Licence from the conclusion of racing on 10 March up to and including 24 March 2019 (6 days).
LILBITBETTOR - out of position at the start despite the efforts of driver J Curtin. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding.
CUTE - lay inwards throughout the score up and was out of position at the start. A warning was placed on the mare's barrier record.
GOODTHINGSTAKETIME - out of position at the start despite the efforts of driver K Barron. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Lay inwards passing the 100 metres and raced roughly after becoming awkwardly positioned close to the sulky of TIGER MOTH.
TIGER MOTH - when questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer/driver H Hunter advised that the gelding had hung at its first start at Ashburton and had benefited from the addition of a gaiting strap to its gear today.
Race 3   GLEN HILL BUILDERS MOBILE TROT
ONE OVER DA SKYE - broke in the early stages of the score up and was out of position by a considerable distance. A warning was placed on the mare's barrier record. Hung outwards through the final straight.
SODS LAW - broke in the early stages losing considerable ground. A warning was placed on the gelding's barrier record. Weakened final bend.
SUCH FUN - trainer S McRae was issued a $100 Minor Infringement Notice after the mare was presented with blinds which had not been notified. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
STAR PRIDE - broke in the score up and lost its chance. A warning was placed on the mare's barrier record.
CHIVASION - trotted roughly and broke approaching the 50 metres.
SPEEDY COMMAND - raced four wide from the 700 metres.
Race 4   DONEGAL HOUSE 'THE LITTLE IRISH PUB NEAR KAIKOURA' MOB PACE
SPICY GIRL BECQUI - raced fiercely in the score up and made contact with the barrier arm causing the mare to lose a length immediately prior to dispatch. Weakened on the final bend inconveniencing trailing runner.
AVA ADORE - lay outwards through the back straight on the final occasion which resulted in the mare half carting for some distance.
CHRISTIAN LADY - broke in the score up losing its chance. The mare is now required to complete one satisfactory mobile trial prior to resuming from this start type.
SEZANA - travelled keenly when leading throughout.
DIVINIA BELLEZZA - raced keenly through the early stages. Inconvenienced by tiring runner on the final bend.
ART BANKER - hung in the score up and was back from the unruly position at the start. Lay inwards and paced roughly on the final bend.
Race 5   GLEN MCNABB ENGINEERING HANDICAP TROT
The start of this race was delayed at the request of the TAB.
SONEY BEATT - broke at the start.
I'LDOITMYWAY - raced keenly through the middle stages. Broke near the 1300 metres. Driver R Close reported it was his opinion the mare had choked down.
IZMOK - lay inwards passing the 400 metres. Held up by tiring runner entering the final straight. Placed inside runner in restricted room leaving the final bend. Driver C DeFilippi was cautioned for the manner in which he drove at this stage of the race.
LOVEY DOVEY MOMENT - began awkwardly and got back as a result. Broke briefly after 100 metres. Trotted roughly under pressure leaving the final bend.
TRICK STAR - placed in restricted room leaving the final bend, striking track markers and locking wheels briefly with IZMOK.
Race 6   'DOWNBYTHESEASIDE' LEONARD MEMORIAL STAKES (MOB PACE)
ARDEN'S SWEETHEART - when spoken to regarding the performance, driver N Purdon explained the filly had travelled lethargically throughout and had been disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
I'LL WRITE THE STORY - broke passing the 1500 metres and was restrained to the back of the field. Trainer/driver K Cox advised the filly had jumped a shadow and she would be adding a shadow roll to its gear.
FANCY - over-raced early stages.
LIVE SPORT - over-raced early stages.
SPELLBOUND - raced wide in the early stages. Broke briefly passing the 1600 metres when improving forward.
Race 7   CHEVIOT BUSINESSES CHEVIOT CUP (HANDICAP PACE)
DOCTOR TIM - broke briefly at the start. Held up by tiring runner on the final bend.
MIKEY MAGUIRE - over-raced through the back straight on the first occasion when being restrained in an attempt to surrender the lead. Weakened on the final bend.
GORE BAY - began awkwardly.
ALTA MAESTRO - raced roughly for a short distance near the 1100 metres when there was a slight easing of the pace.
HENRY HUBERT - broke at the start losing considerable ground.
ALTA ORLANDO - driver R Houghton reported that due to the buckle becoming caught he was not able to release the deafeners.
Race 8   CHEVIOT CONCRETE & AMURI READY MIX MOBILE PACE
LA BELLA VITA - broke in the score up hampering second line runners with a false start being declared. Driver B Weaver elected to move to the unruly position for the re-start where the filly will remain for future mobile starts.
TARA BROMAC - weakened considerably over the concluding stages. Driver B Orange advised he was very disappointed with the filly's performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the connections in the coming days.
CULLENS BET - raced wide in the early stages.
NIGHT LIGHTS - raced keenly around the final bend and struck a track marker when awkwardly positioned to the inside of BETTERTHANSPRAYING. Held up on the final bend and throughout the run home. Driver G Smith reported the deafeners were not activated in consequence.
BETTOR LADY - jumped a shadow near the 1500 metres and broke for several strides inconveniencing SOUTHERN RAIN. Raced keenly when being restrained in an attempt to surrender the lead between the 1300 metres and the 1200 metres. Again jumped a shadow passing the 350 metres inconveniencing KATCHALIGHT, BETTERTHANSPRAYING and NIGHT LIGHTS. A warning was placed on the racing record of the filly. Driver J Alford advised he would be recommending gear changes prior to resuming. Junior driver J Alford, in the presence of Senior Horseman J Cox, was questioned as to whether it may have been prudent to accept cover after his horse had jumped the first shadow. Mr Alford explained that he had made every effort to restrain however the filly had become stirred up by the false start and had caused him some difficulty. Stewards advised Mr Alford that in their opinion he could have made a better effort on two occasions to take a trail when he made it apparent to the improving driver that was his intention.
FOR THE KITTY - raced three wide without cover from the 600 metres. Weakened over the final stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor recovery. Stewards will follow up with the connections in the coming days.
Trainer C Dalgety advised Stewards on 6 March that TARA BROMAC has recovered well subsequent to its disappointing performance at Addington on 3 March and will continue with its current preparation.
Trainer M Howard advised Stewards on 8 March that after having a few days off after its hard run at Addington on 3 March FOR THE KITTY will now resume with its current campaign.
Race 9   CHEVIOT LICENCING TRUST MOBILE TROT
DIDJABRINGTHEBEERS - trainer J Howe was issued a $100 Minor Infringement Notice after the near side hind bandage came adrift.
VALLORIA - had some difficulty obtaining clear racing room in the early stages of the run home.
BELLES SON - broke passing the 500 metres. The connections advised the gelding had lost a shoe during the running.
DESTINY JONES - trotted roughly in the score up and was out of position at dispatch.
MONBET - the required veterinary clearance was received. Out of position at dispatch. Driver R May was fined $100 for failing to maintain his position until the start point. When questioned regarding the performance, Mr May advised he had driven the horse for one run as reported pre-race and given it was the gelding's first run for a considerable period of time, he was not disappointed and MONBET would derive benefit from the run.
Race 10   BUSH INN TAVERN MOBILE PACE
APOCALYPSE - broke near the 1900 metres losing its chance. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding.
MACHSGAIN - held up early and middle stages of the run home.
DOUBLE O HEAVEN - raced keenly when held up on the final bend by a weakening runner.
MATAI MINKY - held up in the early stages of the run home.
FIRST CLASS LADY - weakened from the 600 metres. When spoken to regarding the performance, driver S Ottley explained the mare had been unsuited to working through the middle stages. Stewards will follow up with the connections in the coming days.
JUST DANCE - weakened near the 400 metres. When questioned regarding the performance, driver B Orange expressed disappointment. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor recovery. Stewards will follow up with the connections in the coming days.
KARDESLER - shifted inwards near the 150 metres having to be steadied.
Trainer C Dalgety advised Stewards on 6 March that JUST DANCE has recovered well following its fresh up run at Addington and he expects the mare to show natural improvement in its upcoming engagements.
Trainer R Todd advised Stewards on 8 March that FIRST CLASS LADY has been sent for a spell.
