A Russell (EARTHQUAKE) was spoken to advisedly regarding the manner he shifted wider near the 500 metres causing outside runners to be hampered.

Trainer K Collins advised Stewards on 3 January that JAFFA has been treated for a throat infection subsequent to choking down at Ashburton on 23 December.

Trainer G Smith advised Stewards on 3 January that RED HOT ROCKET has been treated for feet soreness following its run at Reefton and will continue with its campaign at Oamaru next week.

APPEARANCE - slow to begin. Hampered by a breaking runner near the 500 metres. Trotted roughly on the final bend.
HANG ON SUZIE - trainer/driver B Hutton reported the mare would be freshened prior to racing next.
ON THE MANTELPIECE - trotted roughly final bend. Held up early stages of the run home. Trotted roughly over the concluding stages and had to be steadied.
MILLY AN EYRE - held up early stages of the run home.
ZSA ZARA - driver S Tomlinson was warned to make a greater effort to ensure full access to the passing lane is available for trailing runners.
FEKITOA - broke at the start losing all chance.
PERSEVERANCE ROAD - raced wide early stages. Broke at the 1100 metres. A warning was placed on the racing record of the mare. Driver A Lowe was warned for being late to arrive at the start. Mr Lowe reported the mare had lost the near front shoe during the running.
QUAESTOR - broke at the start losing all chance. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the mare.
NATIVE ONEINAMILLION - broke shortly after the start. Broke again racing over the crossing at the 1650 metres losing all chance.

TOPNOTCH TITAN - broke at the start. Broke again at the 1800 metres losing all chance.
RITES OF ZHOU - hampered by a breaking runner near the 500 metres. Broke at the 200 metres.

PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM - broke at the 2000 metres.
MAGICAL MELLISSA - fractious prior to the start causing a delay at the first attempt. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the mare. Raced wide final bend.
SOCIAL MEDIA - broke at the start.
IT'S ME - broke at the start. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Lay outwards throughout the running. Held up final bend.
TOPPATHEROCK - weakened final bend.
DON'T TELL ANGE - raced four wide from the 700 metres. Weakened passing the 400 metres.
RAGING THUNDER - trainer A Stuart was issued a $100 Minor Infringement Notice after the gelding was presented with a pacifier which had not been notified. Raced five wide from the 700 metres.

WANDERING STAR - fractious prior to the start. When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer/driver A Lowe reported the gelding has been treated for various ailments following its last start as noted in the Stewards report. Mr Lowe added that the horse has always possessed ability and had appreciated an economical run throughout.
SPURRED BY SUCCESS - had difficulty obtaining clear racing room in the run home.
EYRE'S A RAG DOLL - trainer A Washington was issued a $50 Minor Infringement Notice for being late to notify that the mare would be racing with a pacifier on. Broke racing into the first bend. Broke again when being steadied to avoid a breaking runner near the 1650 metres. A warning was placed on the racing record of the mare.
STELLAR SUCCESS - when questioned regarding the performance, driver G O'Reilly advised he had been disappointed with the effort however the mare had raced in a similar fashion previously when about to come into season. Stewards will follow up with the connections in the coming days.
DIANA HARBOUR - held up for clear racing room for the majority of the home straight. Driver G Smith reported he was unable to activate the deafeners due to the cord becoming entangled.
MILLY AN EYRE - late scratching at 3.10pm after starting in Race 1.
TOPNOTCH TITAN - underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after starting in Race 1 and was cleared to start. Broke at the start losing all chance. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding.
SUPERFAST MAGGIE - tangled away.
RAZOR - cast a shoe racing into the first bend. Broke near the 1700 metres when being steadied to avoid a breaking runner. Broke again near the 700 metres after trotting roughly.

EARTHQUAKE - raced wide early stages. Weakened final bend. Trainer/driver A Russell advised the gelding had travelled lethargically throughout and had been disappointing. He added that the gelding will now be tried as a trotter.
BETTOR TRENZ - held up early stages of the run home.
PEMBROOK BLUE - held up early stages of the run home.
GOD ONLY KNOWS - broke near the 1400 metres after a front hopple carrier came adrift. Trainer G Smith admitted a breach of Rule 864(2)(d) in that he failed to affix the hopple carrier so as not to come adrift. After hearing submissions on penalty, the JCA imposed a fine of $200.
TURKISH TROUSERS - had difficulty obtaining clear racing room for the majority of the home straight.

LOCKSMITH - weakened from the 700 metres and was eased down by driver B Butt. When questioned regarding the performance, Mr Butt could offer no explanation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. A warning was placed on the racing performance of the gelding. Stewards will follow up with the connections in the coming days.
TRES MAGNIFIQUE - briefly locked wheels with MOTU GREAT SENSATION near the 250 metres.
TAKE AFTER ME - driver R Houghton reported the deafeners were not activated due to having the field covered.
NATIVES LASTING LOVE - broke at the start. Held up by a tiring runner passing the 400 metres.
UNIQUE ROSE - broke at the start.
ALI LINDENNY - checked and broke near the 1800 metres.
WESTEROS - weakened final bend.
MOTU GREAT SENSATION - briefly locked wheels with TRES MAGNIFIQUE near the 250 metres.
SONEY BEATT - broke near the 1800 metres checking a trailing runner. Driver A Tomlinson reported the gelding had struck itself causing it to break. A warning was placed on the racing record of the gelding. Held up passing the 600 metres.
SCARLETT BANNER - broke shortly after the start losing all chance.
WE'LL MEET AGAIN - awkwardly placed close to the sulky of ONE NIGHT OUT near the 700 metres after an easing of the pace.
ARRAN CHIEF - weakened from the 400 metres.

GLENTHORNE - broke as the start was effected. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Paced roughly near the 250 metres and had to be steadied. Driver S Tomlinson reported the gelding had failed to handle the grass track. A post-race veterinary examination showed an abrasion to the gelding's front heel. The connections advised the horse will be withdrawn from its engagement at Timaru HRC on 5 January 2019.
KOTARE COSTA - driver J Dunn reported he did not activate the sliding blinds due to having the field covered.
THE DUDE - broke racing into the first bend. Paced roughly in the home straight. Driver B Butt admitted a breach of Rule 869(2) in that he used his whip on more occasions than permitted by Clause (b) of the Use of Whip Regulations. After submissions on penalty, the JCA suspended Mr Butt's Horseman's Licence from the conclusion of racing on 8 January up to and including 16 January 2019 (3 days).
LA BELLA VITA - trainer B Weaver was issued a $100 Minor Infringement Notice after a side carrier came adrift over the concluding stages.
 
Race 7DORMER CONSTRUCTION LTD MOBILE PACEVideo  Video 
MAD LU LI - over-raced in the early stages and when there was an easing of the pace made contact with the right wheel of DIRECT CONTROL. Stewards spoke with drivers K Cox (MAD LU LI) and J Morrison (DIRECT CONTROL) regarding this incident. After hearing from both drivers it was established that DIRECT CONTROL had lay inwards when being restrained to obtain cover resulting in the trailing MAD LU LI which was over-racing becoming awkwardly placed close to the sulky wheel despite the efforts of Ms Cox. Stewards took the matter no further.
DIRECT CONTROL - lay inwards racing into the first bend. Broke at the 1650 metres when racing over the crossing and was retired from the race after the outside sulky tube had come off the rim.
PAY ME VISA - weakened final bend. Driver R Close was warned for using his whip when out of contention.
GORE BAY - raced wide early stages. Hampered by a breaking runner near the 1600 metres.
THREE IDEAS - raced roughly in the early stages. Hampered racing into the first bend after an easing of the pace. Hampered again passing the 1650 metres by a breaking runner. When questioned regarding the performance, driver R May advised the gelding had received a couple of checks early in the race and had run home well after having to settle too far back in the field. He added that he was surprised by the horse's favouritism in the field he was racing against today.
READY TO BLOOM - paced roughly final bend. Driver B Butt reported he was unable to activate the removable gear due to the cord becoming entangled.
SAMSKARA - raced wide early stages. Hampered by a breaking runner near the 1600 metres.

PAUL'S VERDICT - held up early stages of the run home. Driver R Close was warned to exercise care when shifting ground over the concluding stages when placing outside runner in restricted room.
SWAP OVER - had to be steadied late in the run home when placed in restricted room.
WILD EXCUSE - weakened final bend. When questioned regarding the performance, driver G Smith reported the filly had paced roughly throughout and he had been disappointed with the effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with Trainer P Burrows in the coming days.
JACK'S SHADOW - hung inwards throughout the home straight.
SENORITA MARGARITA - over-raced middle stages. Lay in on the final bend. Held up for clear racing room throughout the home straight. Driver J Young reported the sliding blinds were not activated in consequence.
FLASHING DIAMOND - held up early stages of the run home.
HIGHLAND REIGN - held up early stages of the run home.
 
Race 9LEVELHEAD INSULATION PACEVideo  Video 
RED TERROR - tangled away. Held up throughout the run home.
LINTON SHARD - held up leaving the final bend. Driver M Anderson will be spoken to in the coming days after failing to report the non activation of the removable deafeners applied to the gelding.
BETTOR CHANCE - broke at the start and shifted outwards abruptly. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the mare.
PHOENIX ARIZONA - broke at the start. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Over-raced middle stages. Raced wide from the 1500 metres. Hung inwards and weakened final bend. Driver B Orange reported he did not activate the deafeners.
ESSENCE OF EASTON - hung inwards rounding the final bend before breaking and falling to the track. Driver G O'Reilly who was unharmed, reported the gelding to have hung throughout causing him considerable difficulty. A post-race veterinary examination showed no abnormalities. The gelding is now required to complete one satisfactory trial.
ABIENTO - hung inwards throughout the run home. Driver J Morrison was warned to make a greater effort to ensure he leaves full access to the passing lane in the early stages of the run home.
