Pre-race blood testing was carried out on selected runners.

Drivers underwent testing for alcohol with all providing clear results.

M Maynard (ROYAL JESTER) was spoken to regarding his use of the whip over the final stages. Mr Maynard was also issued with a warning for failing to remain on course for the required fifteen minutes following the race.

THANK YOU - broke at the 1800 metres. Trotted roughly throughout.
FEKITOA - hampered by a breaking runner and broke near the 1800 metres. Broke again approaching the 1200 metres.
FOREIGNER - lay inwards in the home straight and broke with 250 metres to run after being shifted wider by DESERT WINGS (B Orange). Stewards spoke with drivers G Hunt and B Orange regarding this where it was established that B Orange had shifted outwards in an acceptable manner and that due to hanging inwards FOREIGNER had failed to handle this shift and had broken as a result. After hearing their explanations no further action was deemed necessary.
HANG ON SUZIE - broke at the start.
DESERT PRINCE - raced roughly through the early stages and broke at the 2000 metres. Broke again at the 1700 metres.
SUNRISE SPUR - hung outwards and held up on the final bend.
RAZOR - held up on the final bend.

Prior to this race the track was upgraded to good.
CANSTAR - over-raced middle stages. Raced greenly early in the run home and lay outwards.
KOTARE YOLANDE - the start was delayed due to the filly requiring attention from the farrier. Hung outwards in the score up however was in position at the start. Continued to hang outwards during the running. Driver J Dunn advised the deafeners were not activated due to having the field covered.
TABITHA FRANCO - had some difficulty obtaining clear racing room in the early and middle stages of the run home and had to shift ground to obtain clear running. Driver R May was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted near the 600 metres when electing not to improve wider on the track instead allowing his horse to be covered by improving runners. Mr May advised it was the mare's first run for two months and she was not suited to racing wide or without cover for a sustained distance. He added that he had been hopeful of trailing a horse forward into the race however this had not eventuated and so opted for an inside run. After considering his explanation and reviewing the films Stewards accepted his explanation.
JAFFA - raced fiercely through the middle stages. Retired from the race with 1400 metres to run. When spoken to driver C Markham advised the mare had choked down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. When spoken to regarding this trainer K Collins advised it was his intention to add an anti-choke device. A warning was placed on the mare's racing record.
AVEROSS SPITFIRE - raced wide around the first bend.
AGENT WEST - improved wide through the middle stages. Weakened over the final stages. When questioned regarding the performance, driver S Ottley advised that at this stage of the horse's career, the mare is still green and not suited to covering extra ground during the running.

CHAIN REACTION - swung sideways and broke at the start checking outside runner. A warning was placed on the mare's barrier record.
MATAI MINKY - fractious prior to the start causing a delay. Checked and broke at the start.
RUBY TUES BAY - fractious prior to the start causing a delay. Broke at the start.
DARRYL KERRIGAN - broke at the start.
WOODLEA EXPLORER - hung inwards through the middle stages.

DIANA HARBOUR - lay inwards in the home straight.
ROCKNPOP - the connections advised the mare has been served since last racing. Held up early and middle stages of the run home.
RARANGI OPAL - broke shortly after the start losing its chance.
HEAVENLY LOVE - broke over the final stages. The all clear was delayed until Stewards confirmed the horse had complied with the Breaking Horse Regulations prior to 4th placing being authorised.
CLIFDEN CLOWERS - when questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer S Mounce advised the horse is more suited to racing with cover as opposed to leading as it had done at its previous start. She added that today's opposition was of a lesser calibre than the horse has been racing against in recent starts.
SPURRED BY SUCCESS - broke at the start.
RED HARBOUR - broke at the start losing its chance. Declared unruly for standing starts at the request of trainer K James.
EYRE'S A RAG DOLL - trotted roughly through the middle stages. Broke with 500 metres to run.
UNIQUE MARSHALL - held up early stages of the run home.
RACHMANINOV - backed away at the start and refused to take any part in the race. Declared a non-runner by Stewards. Stood down to complete one satisfactory trial from a stand. Trainer/driver T Grant advised he would be giving the gelding a brief freshen up.
SUCH FUN - broke at the start. Raced wide without cover from the 1100 metres.
THE REV - when questioned regarding the performance, driver M Williamson could only advise he had been disappointed with the efforts of his runner. Stewards will speak with trainer T Yesberg in the coming days.
 
Race 5SPRAYMARKS GROUP PACEVideo  Video 
TWILIGHT SAGA - paced roughly near the 500 metres.
DEN'S LEGACY - raced keenly in the middle stages. Held up throughout the run home. Driver M Anderson advised the gelding had paced roughly and had over-raced at times during the running. Mr Anderson also advised the deafeners and blinds were not activated due to being held up.
MAGICAL MATTY - broke briefly at the start. Held up throughout the run home.
IDEAL RULE - broke briefly shortly after the start.
ITSTHEFINALCOUNTDOWN - paced roughly then broke with 1200 metres to run.
SPOT ON - when questioned regarding the improved performance, driver J Dunn advised the horse had derived benefit from each start and was starting to live up to the promise shown in training.
DONEGAL CARNBOUY - broke at the start.
EASTWOOD ISABELLA - over-raced middle stages. Hung inwards and struck pylons on the final bend.
CHILLER BAY - improved to the lead at the 1300 metres before laying outwards at the 1200 metres. Continued to lay outwards throughout the back straight. Hung inwards in the home straight. When questioned regarding the performance, driver B Orange advised the horse had attempted to run off at the gate.
ROCK ON - raced wide from the 950 metres.
ARDENT LUSTRE - had to be steadied at the 1700 metres.
 
Race 6'TROT TO LONDON' CANSTAFF ASHBURTON CUP (HANDICAP PACE)Video  Video 
ALTA MAESTRO - broke briefly at the start. Raced keenly throughout.
SHERIFF - when questioned regarding the performance, trainer N McGrath advised it was the horse's first start for two months and had missed recent trial runs due to the inclement weather. Mr McGrath added that the entire should derive benefit from today's run and will most likely start at Omakau in the New Year.
BAILEYS KNIGHT - broke racing into the first bend. A final warning was placed on the gelding's racing record.
LETSPENDANITETOGETHA - raced keenly throughout.
 
Race 7T F PEARSON MEMORIAL TROTVideo  Video 
Prior to this race the track was upgraded to fast.
I'LDOITMYWAY - a front bandage came adrift and fell to the track near the 1100 metres. Trainer B Williams was issued a $100 Minor Infringement Notice for failing to ensure this gear was correctly affixed.
ALADDIN SANE - broke at the start and lost its chance.
TRES MAGNIFIQUE - broke at the start. Driver S Ottley advised one tyre had deflated during the running.
MISSIE CASTLETON - broke at the start. A final warning was placed on the mare's barrier record. Hung inwards in the middle stages. Held up early stages of the run home.
ALDEBARAN BONNY - trotted roughly on the first bend and broke at the 1900 metres.
GIRLS LET LOOSE - hung inwards and struck pylons near the 1200 metres. Held up on the final bend.
ASTOUND - trotted roughly on occasions in the home straight. When spoken to regarding the manner he drove over the final stages, co-trainer/driver D Butt explained the mare had trotted roughly when pressured and he was unable to fully test her. He added the mare will now be sent for a spell.
WESTEROS - the boring pole was removed prior to the start after warming up unfavourably. Underwent a veterinary examination prior to the start and was cleared to race. Broke shortly after the start.
JAW D NANCY - weakened on the final bend after racing parked throughout the middle stages, and was unsuccessful in an attempt for the front.
 
Race 8ASHBURTON GUARDIAN/ASHBURTON APP MOBILE PACEVideo  Video 
ANYTIME - raced keenly in the early stages. Broke near the 1300 metres when being restrained to surrender the lead and was retired from the event. When questioned regarding this, driver M Hurrell explained the mare had struck its sulky wheels due to over-racing and panicked. A warning was placed on the racing record of the mare. The connections advised they would be adding an overcheck to the horse's gear.
ULTIMATE DESIRE - checked near the 1300 metres.
QUEEN BEE BARDON - when questioned regarding the performance, trainer B Waldron advised he was disappointed with the mare's effort and would be having blood tests taken in the coming days. Mr Waldron undertook to notify the results of these tests to Stewards.
TACT MAGGIE - there was a slight delay to the start due to the mare requiring the services of the farrier.
JUST DANCE - checked by a breaking runner near the 1300 metres.
It was requested this race be re-timed at which point it was found the original call of 2.01 was incorrect.
 
Race 9HANLEY FORMULA MOBILE PACEVideo  Video 
THE TIN SOLDIER - held up on the final bend. Driver M Williamson was questioned regarding the manner he drove in the early stages as to whether he could have made a better effort to hold the trailing position. Mr Williamson advised that in the horse's last campaign the horse had not reacted well to being driven vigorously and would race fiercely amongst the field in consequence. He added that in the score up today the horse had not paced fluently and so he had preferred to be more conservative. After reviewing the incident, Stewards accepted his explanation and took the matter no further.
FRANCO TEXAS - driver J Curtin advised the deafeners were unable to be activated due to the cord breaking.
READY TO BLOOM - held up throughout the run home.
 
Race 10BROWN BOMBERS SYNDICATE HANDICAP TROTVideo  Video 
BREENYS CULLEN - broke briefly at the start. Raced wide from the 1400 metres.
MR FAHRENHEIT - broke at the start.
JUSTAMOLLYARCHER - broke at the start losing all chance.
ONE NIGHT OUT - hampered by a breaking runner near the 300 metres.
ONE APOLLO - broke with 300 metres to run.
SCARLETT BANNER - the rein pricker was removed prior to the start after warming up unfavourably. Broke at the start then paced before being corrected into its correct gait.
RED HOT POKER - raced wide from the 1400 metres to reach the parked position near the 800 metres. Weakened from the 200 metres. When questioned regarding the performance, driver T Williams advised the gelding had to work hard during the running and is more suited to being driven in a conservative manner.
ARRAN CHIEF - a false start was declared due to ARRAN CHIEF facing in the wrong direction. A warning was placed on the gelding's barrier record. Lay inwards in the home straight.

TURKISH TROUSERS - checked near the 1400 metres.
OHOKA CHOPPER - over-raced in the middle stages when in the parked position.
ONE DIRECTION - checked near the 1400 metres.
HOT STARFF - checked near the 1400 metres.
CHANGE THE PRINT - lay inwards throughout the final straight.
FRANCO RIOT - broke briefly with 1800 metres to run when driver A Lethaby attempted to activate the hopple shorteners. Checked near the 1400 metres.
PEMBROOK LEGACY - checked near the 1800 metres.
BANZIE - broke with 1400 metres to run checking trailing runners. When spoken to regarding this driver S Tomlinson reported the gelding to have been striking itself. A warning was placed on the gelding's racing record.
