Stewards lodged a Protest under Rule 870(5) alleging that the gelding had been Lapped On by the 5th placed MONARO MIA. After hearing submissions from Stewards and viewing the video coverage along with the photo finish, the JCA dismissed the Protest. When questioned regarding his decision not to utilise the Passing Lane driver G Smith explained that the gelding had hung outwards and felt that rather than shift inwards, he was better suited to improve wider on the track. Mr Smith added he would be making gear changes prior to the 2nd day.

Mr Cox explained that he had commenced to improve three wide onto the back of WESTBURN YIELD near the 600 metres however shortly after the gelding had paced roughly when racing over the crossing resulting in him having to steady the horse losing ground. Mr Cox added that he was reluctant to check the momentum of ONE OFF and improve onto the back of WESTBURN YIELD again and felt he was better placed improving between runners. After hearing from Mr Cox, Stewards took the matter no further.

The start was delayed due to the gear on LOVETODREAM requiring attention.

AUGUSTA(AUS) - broke when racing over the crossing near the 2200 metres losing its chance.
CLASINA MARIA - broke at the start.
LOVETODREAM - had difficulty obtaining clear running in the middle stages of the run home. Stewards questioned horseman J Dunn regarding his decision not to improve his position near the 1000 metres when a covered run was available. Mr Dunn explained it had been his intention to follow CLASINA MARIA forwards however when runners improved to his outside his mare had over-raced causing him to become awkwardly positioned close to the back of FRANCO TRISTAN's sulky who was then able to take the position he had desired. Mr Dunn added that this had cost his runner its momentum and if he then elected to shift wider he was likely, in his opinion, to be shifted three wide due to him not being able to maintain a trail in the two wide line. Mr Dunn also stated that LOVETODREAM was not suited to racing without cover and when previously driven in this manner had proved disappointing which was the reason he then decided to shift inwards to race against the pylons. After considering his explanation, Stewards were satisfied that Mr Dunn's actions were not unreasonable given the circumstances and took the matter no further.
