Pre-race blood testing was carried out on selected runners.

Subsequent to its last start trainer D Burrows reported LIGHTWORKOFIT (Race 3) would be restricted to Mobile events. When queried regarding it being nominated for a standing start race today Mr Burrows explained whilst that had been his intention, and still is his preference going forwards, the horse's rating had dropped sufficiently to allow to it enter this race where it was to be drawn unruly from a back mark and therefore granted more room at the start.

Race 8 - RANGIORA NEW WORLD SUMMER CUP (HANDICAP PACE)
Stewards have concluded their inquires in relation to the manner CLASINA MARIA (J Young) and PRADAS IDEAL DAHLING (G O'Reilly) were driven in this race.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted driver J Young explained that after reaching the lead near the 2000 metres she had been reluctant to restrain to trail PRADAS IDEAL DAHLING as it had failed to finish the race off when leading at its previous start at Motukarara and felt it was not a horse likely to take her to the passing lane, especially after working in the early stages to take up a forward position. When questioned regarding the horse previously racing well after being driven with cover she confirmed this to be the case however in recent starts the mare had been unlucky and so when receiving a handy barrier draw the connections had decided to try the mare from in front and remove the chance of being unlucky. These instructions were confirmed by Trainer P Young.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted driver G O'Reilly explained that after being left to race parked near the 2000 metres he elected to challenge CLASINA MARIA for the lead as his horse is unsuited to being left to race parked and when no horse came forwards in the early stages with him to offer cover felt his only chance was to wrest the lead off CLASINA MARIA. He added that he felt it was likely that Miss Young would restrain to trail, especially if he applied some pressure, as CLASINA MARIA was a noted sit and sprint horse.
After considering their explanations, Stewards deemed that the actions of drivers Young and O'Reilly were not altogether unreasonable in the circumstances. Notwithstanding this both were advised that their lack of judgement had opened them to query and cautioned them that in future it was expected they make a better assessment of the situation and restrain their runners at an earlier opportunity.
