Race 1 - MELBOURNE CUP AT CAMBRIDGE RACEWAY MOBILE PACE
In regard to Amateur Horsewoman S Wigg's drive, Stewards reviewed M T POCKETS's previous 6 starts to establish its normal racing pattern and confirmed the Trainer T Vince's view as previously reported that the gelding raced best when driven on the speed due to being one paced and not possessing a sharp sprint. In this event which was a drop back in class for M T POCKETS the race sectionals were run 44.0 lead time (slow), and the first and second quarters of the last mile run in 32.8, 32.4 (very slow) before the last quarters quickened to 28.9 and 28.5. when Ms Wigg attempted to improve M T POCKETS just prior to the 800metres 3 wide. M T POCKETS finished 6th 9.6 lengths in arrears of the winner. Following the race M T POCKETS was found to have sustained swelling in its right hind pastern consistent with having struck itself in its early gallop, with this in mind, Stewards are unable to establish the effect of the injury on the gelding's performance. In that early gallop of approximately 170 metres (which would have resulted in the gelding being disqualified if it finished in a stake bearing place),it would have lost 50 metres on the leaders and it is estimated approximately 35 metres back from where it probably would have been if it remained in its correct gait. Although the Stewards were considerably concerned with Ms Wigg's drive taking into account the ground she lost in the gelding's early gallop without giving it any respite and that she displayed horsemanship below a standard expected of her that there are too many factors that do not support a serious driving charge. Therefore the Stewards, other than placing a reprimand on Ms Wigg's driving record, withdrew the charges before the JCA.
