MARKIM - raced roughly at the 1000 metres. Continued to race roughly thereafter losing ground over the final stages. A post-race veterinary examination showed hock soreness. The gelding has been stood down pending a veterinary clearance.

Race 5GRAPHITE DEVELOPMENTS LTD SHOW DAY FUTURITY PRELUDE MOB PACEVideo  Video
BETTOR THAN THAT - made a sustained attempt for the front between the 2100 metres and the 1850 metres at which point the gelding was restrained. Placed in restricted room for a short distance near the 1650 metres having to be steadied. Made a further and again unsuccessful attempt for the front passing the 1600 metres before being restrained near the 1500 metres to take cover behind the improving OHOKA JOHNNY.
Stewards questioned driver R Payne regarding these tactics in the early and middle stages. Mr Payne explained his runner had developed a successful racing pattern by being positioned handy to the pace and for this reason it was his intention to either lead or race outside the leader this evening. He added that the lead driver (J Young) had on several occasions intimated that the lead was available however she had been unable to restrain her runner sufficiently to allow this to happen. Mr Payne also said that after his initial attempt at the front he had given his runner some respite but when challenged by OHOKA JOHNNY felt it in his best interests to try and beat that runner to the lead but had again been disadvantaged by MOCKINGJAY over-racing. After considering his explanation, other drivers' explanations and reviewing the films, Stewards took the matter no further other than to note the circumstances.
EDITORIAL - late scratching at 11.15am on Veterinary advice.
MOCKINGJAY - raced fiercely through the back straight on the first occasion when unsuccessfully being restrained to take a trail behind the improving BETTOR THAN THAT. Continued to over-race when again pressured for the lead on the bend near the 1600 metres maintaining its lead until near the 900 metres when finally able to take a trail behind the improving BUBBLE GUM. Driver J Young advised the mare had caused her considerable difficulty throughout and it was the stable's intention to consider gear changes.
OHOKA JOHNNY - taken forwards in the early stages to race in a prominent position. Taken three wide near the 1850 metres and made an unsuccessful attempt for the front having to race wide until near the 1300 metres. When questioned regarding this driver J Cox explained that on each occasion he had attempted to restrain his gelding the horse began to strike the sulky wheels causing it to further over-race. This was evident on Stewards films. Trainer T Bagrie advised he had used a different sulky set up to which he had last used at the trials and it was his intention to try the gelding in a longer sulky.
THE TIN SOLDIER - checked on the final bend when under pressure.
MATAU GEM - hung throughout. Shifted outwards abruptly on the final bend. Stewards spoke with drivers G Smith and M Williamson (THE TIN SOLDIER) regarding this incident where it was established that MATAU GEM had given driver G Smith considerable difficulty and had attempted to run off causing interference. Stewards placed a warning on the mare's racing record.
