CONNIE JACCKA - over-raced through the middle stages. Weakened final bend. When questioned regarding the performance driver N Williamson advised that over-racing on occasions during the running had taken its toll on the filly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed CONNIE JACCKA to have a high heart rate however recovered well, with no other abnormalities detected.

Driver B Barclay admitted a breach of Rule 869(3)(b) in that he drove carelessly when shifting ground outwards near the 350m and allowing his horse to strike the sulky wheel of CAPTAIN BLIGH, resulting in the tyre puncturing. After viewing replays and considering submissions on penalty the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Barclay's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing today up to and including 11 March 2023 (2 days).

SOCIAL DISTANCING - broke in the score up of the restart checking trailing runners with a second false start being declared. Driver R Close elected to move to the unruly position for the restart. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. When assessing this Stewards took into account that there had already been a false start. Over-raced early stages when racing wide on the track. Paced roughly rounding the final bend.

SOCIAL DISTANCING - raced wide early. Driver G Thornley was questioned regarding the manner she drove near the 1700m when placing ELDOLAR in restricted room. Miss Thornley explained when she had gained the advantage to shift the inside runner down she was unaware of the improving AVA ADORE on that runner's inside and when she attempted to shift her horse out it was slow to react. After viewing the replays Stewards accepted Miss Thornley's explanation and took the matter no further.

AIRWAVES - underwent a pre-race Veterinary examination after not having raced for a considerable period of time and was cleared to start.

AIRWAVES - out of position at the start despite the efforts of driver R McIlwrick. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding.

AIRWAVES - the inside sulky tyre deflated near the 1200m with the tube coming off the rim near the 400m. The gelding then shifted out entering the home straight with the trailing HACKSAW RIDGE (R Holmes) getting its off front leg caught in the tube of the sulky of AIRWAVES when shifting ground inwards with the gelding stumbling and eventually falling to the track with several trailing runners being checked. AIRWAVES was eased down by driver C Thornley with the sulky then tipping resulting in Mr Thornley being dislodged. After viewing the replays Stewards were satisfied no driver was at fault and accordingly no further action was required. Mr Thornley was examined by the St John Ambulance personnel and stood down from his remaining driving engagements and advised a Medical clearance would be required prior to him driving next. Mr Holmes was unharmed in this incident.

After viewing replays and considering submissions on penalty the Adjudicative Committee imposed a fine of $300.

Following the race, Stewards requested a Ruling with the Adjudicative Committee to determine whether MAMMA MIA was denied a fair start under Rule 213(1)(j). After viewing the replays and hearing evidence from Stewards, Starter B Ward and driver K Tomlinson, the Adjudicative Committee declared MAMMA MIA a runner.
