HEZALUCKYGRINNER - attempted to lead the whole journey, weakening from inside the final 400 metres finishing 9th beaten 15.6 lengths. Driver S Phelan was questioned by Stewards in regard to the driving tactics adopted near the 1200 metres, specifically in relation to his decision to retain the lead when challenged by RHYTHM N BLUES (favourite), and as to whether he would have been better served to have taken a trail. Mr Phelan stated connections had instructed him to lead up if possible and although required to do some work to retain the lead he had been able to set his own terms in front through the first quarter of the last mile which was run in a moderate 31.7 seconds. He further stated that Driver D Butcher (RHYTHM N BLUES) had only challenged for a short distance approaching the bell and that he was disappointed with his gelding's performance given its recent form. Mr Phelan's comments were noted. | |
