Race 9 - SBSR - GRANT ENTERPRISES - ARDEN LODGE HANDICAP TROT
Stewards questioned J Dunn (HARRIET OF MOT) regarding the tactics adopted passing the 100 metres when shifting outwards to improve his position but soon after became held up behind EVERYBODY KNOWS (R May) when there was sufficient room to shift inwards and obtain an unimpeded run to the finish line. Mr Dunn explained that he had been checked in the middle stages of the run home by HEY YO (J Harrington) and so had to shift outwards to find clear running, from that point onwards he felt it in his best interests to allow the mare to continue outwards not anticipating that he would be held up considering the short distance to the finish line. He added that his mare had been inclined to shift inwards on the bends and outwards on the straights and so was reluctant to unbalance her at this time to direct her inwards when she was naturally tending to run out. Mr Dunn said he was also mindful of the horse's previous starts when galloping without excuse. After considering the matter Stewards deemed that the actions of Mr Dunn were not unreasonable in the circumstances however advised him that he had erred in his tactics and in future he should drive in manner that does not leave him exposed to query.
NZ Metro TC - Thursday, 23rd February 2017
Race 8 - BLING IT ON SON OF AMERICAN IDEAL HANDICAP PACE
Stewards questioned Horseman R Close (RIGHTEOUS BROTHER) regarding the manner he drove near the 2000 metres when the horse to his outside (TORRID BROMAC) was able to shift from the parked out position into a position ahead of him and nearer to the pylons. Mr Close explained that near the 2100 metres he had been aware of TORRID BROMAC improving forwards and anticipated that runner would be taken to the front. For this reason he said he did not initially urge his runner but that once he noticed TORRID BROMAC had been unsuccessful in his attempt at the front he placed his horse under significant pressure to take up the position behind the horse in front of him. He added that despite his urgings over some distance his runner had failed to respond and make up any ground which had allowed TORRID BROMAC to be taken inwards by driver B Orange. Stewards whilst satisfied that Mr Close had not intended to assist TORRID BROMAC deemed that his actions, or lack thereof, may have been capable of diminishing his chances and was warned that he should drive in a more competitive manner in future should similar circumstances present themself.
