Race Comments
Race 1 OSBORNE GROUP CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS MOBILE PACE Video  Video
VALMARA - was slow to move out of the pre-race formation then paced roughly in the score-up and was back out of position at the start. Paced roughly in the early stages. Broke approaching the 150 metres. A warning was placed on the racing manners of this mare.
COTTONWOOD - refused to leave the pre-race formation and was well back at the start. A warning was placed on the mobile barrier manners of this mare.
TRIXIE BROMAC - shifted out under pressure in the final straight. D Ferguson was spoken to and advised that he must maintain as straight a course as possible in the final straight.
GO PADDY - broke inside the final 50 metres, settling just prior to the winning post.
STRAWBERRY MOOSE - paced roughly in the final straight.
JERSEY JOE WALCOTT - was inclined to lay out rounding the final bend and was reluctant to improve to the inside of TRIXIE BROMAC in the final straight due to its tendency to lay out.
MIDNIGHT HOUR - Stewards questioned driver J Abernethy into the reasons why he elected to move from a position trailing the leader to race outside the leader passing the 1200 metres. Mr Abernethy explained that after being reluctant to hand up the lead in the early stages, the gelding had paced indifferently when in the trail adding that MIDNIGHT HOUR had paced roughly with cover at its previous start at Manawatu on 22 November 2016. Mr Abernethy further advised that he had been instructed by trainer D Gale to keep in the open and maintain an even speed, with Mr Gale confirming those instructions, Mr Abernethy was also mindful that there was no passing lane in use today. Mr Abernethy's explanation was noted.

Race 2 CONNIE STEWART - BAYLEYS WAIRARAPA MOBILE PACE Video  Video
DELIGHTFUL ZEN - the near-side hopple shortener failed to activate due to the cord breaking. The gear was inspected and found to be in a satisfactory condition.
BRAINSTORMER - held up early in the final straight.
P TOMADO - held up throughout the final straight.

Race 3 LARNOCH STUD MOBILE PACE Video  Video
BOBBIE'S GIRL - was held up early in the final straight before attempting to improve outwards, where the mare was again unable to obtain clear running for the remainder of the final straight. When questioned into his drive in the final straight, driver S Dickson advised Stewards that prior to shifting out passing the 200 metres there had not been a full run to the inside of the leader SUNDARA, as there was no passing lane available he attempted to improve outwards. The leader had then shifted out when weakening passing the 150 metres which allowed TUHERBS TWO to improve to its inside. Mr Dickson's explanation was accepted.
MANIHIKI PEARL - was unable to obtain clear running throughout the final straight.
