STROKE OF LUCK - broke at the start. Held up passing the 100 metres. Stewards questioned Junior Horseman M Anderson (assisted by N McGrath) regarding his decision to shift inwards near the 350 metres as opposed to improving outwards which would have ensured he gained clear racing room throughout the final straight. Mr Anderson explained his runner had lost ground at the start and lost its advantage of a good draw. This, he said, was crucial as the horse was racing up in grade from recent starts. Mr Anderson added that his horse was under pressure on the bend as evidenced by the horse failing to respond to either the activation of the blinds and deafeners or the use of his whip. At this point he advised that he was aware the pace of the final 800 metres was significant and believed his runner was not travelling well enough to run a place so let it shift inwards. Mr Anderson said over the final stages he felt the leaders coming back to him and so angled his runner into a position to the inside of MAVERICK however that runner had shifted in meaning he had to steady. After assessing the matter Stewards deemed that Mr Anderson had erred in his decision to shift inwards at this time but that the reasons for his decision were not unreasonable in the circumstances. Accordingly no further action was taken than to speak to Mr Anderson about his tactics which had left him open to query.
MR MEDDLE - broke at the start. Tired from the 500 metres. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
EARS BURNING - over-raced in the middle stages. Driver N McGrath admitted a breach of Rule 869(2)(a) alleging he had used his whip in an excessive manner over the final 400 metres. After considering all submissions, the JCA imposed a fine of $300.
