GUPTA'S CULLEN - Driver J. Cox was questioned by Stewards in regard to his driving tactics on the favourite, in particular in relation to his decision to shift from a position in the one out running line down on to the markers near the 900 metres. Mr Cox stated that this was the mare's first race right handed and that she had tended to lay in on the bends. She dropped the bit after having raced keenly near the 1100 metres which enabled KAITLYN to shift out from the marker line in front of his mare. Mr Cox further explained that GUPTA'S CULLEN had then laid in further on the bend leaving the front straight approaching the 900 metres and he felt that it was his best option to shift to the marker line. He was of the opinion that his mare would not be able to be competitive attempting to improve wide had he remained in the one out running line. He also added that GUPTA'S CULLEN had then been able to improve forward racing down the back when other runners shifted outwards to be on the back of ALTA INTRIGUE, which was racing one out outside the leader, on the final turn but was then badly held up over the final stages when unable to secure clear running. After considering the matter Stewards were of the opinion that the manner in which Mr Cox drove near the 900 metres was not so unreasonable given the circumstances to be culpable and no further action was deemed necessary other than to note his explanation. Mr Cox advised that the mare raced with a rein pricker in order to attempt to correct its tendency to lay in and he would give consideration to a further change of gear to assist in its tractability.
SHADOW PASS - held up rounding the final bend, contacting a pylon early in the run home.
