Race 8 - KERRY HOGGARD MEMORIAL - 'THE HOLMES DG' (HANDICAP PACE)
Stewards have concluded an investigation into the tactics adopted by M McKendry as the driver of HUGHIE GREEN when electing to shift inwards near the 1000 metres to assume a position four back on the pylon line. Mr McKendry explained that his horse had begun awkwardly and was then hampered in the early stages causing him to get further back than he had anticipated. He said that due to the track conditions his gelding had not been comfortable in it's gait and he was not prepared to improve wider on the track because of this. McKendry added that the horse he was following (ROCKER BAND) had broken at the start and was hanging inwards and was unlikely to take him forwards with cover and when assessing the pace of the race at the time he felt his best chance was to shift inwards and drive the horse with one run. He then said he had been able to find the back of ROBBIE BURNS near the 350 metres, who he considered would be able to take him into the race, however that horse had failed to quicken leading him to become held up throughout the run home. In assessing the drive Stewards considered the submissions of Mr McKendry, the run of HUGHIE GREEN prior to the 1000 metres and the times the race was being run in and after doing so it was decided that the actions of Mr McKendry at this time were not unreasonable and the matter will be taken no further.
