Race 1 - BOOK YOUR PRIVATE CHRISTMAS PARTY AT ALEX PARK HANDICAP TROT
Stewards conducted an investigation into the starting position of THEBESTLOVE (Z. Butcher). THEBESTLOVE made a clean beginning in behind MOMENT OF TRUTH on the 20 metre barrier mark instead of being in the unruly position off the 10 metre handicap mark. Driver Z. Butcher advised that he was partially at fault by being late to move forward and the starter's assistant quickly put up the 20 metre barrier strand and the start was immediately effected with THEBESTLOVE not being able to move forward to the 10 metre handicap mark. He also advised that the horse's chances were not materially affected as the gelding is generally a tardy beginner and started better than normal. The gelding was checked by a galloping runner during the race in an unrelated incident with it losing its chance. Stewards reviewed the video coverage with Starter F. Phelan who stated that he had called Mr Butcher into line and had decided to effect the start. Mr Phelan was advised that a repetition of incorrect starting procedures would result in a charge. Driver Z. Butcher was advised that should this situation arise again he would be expected to report the matter to the Stewards immediately.
