General
Stewards questioned T Chmiel as the co-trainer of LAYTONS CRUSADER (Race 3) regarding comments he made on Trackside surrounding his gelding's prospects. Mr Chmiel advised that his gelding had trialled on two occasions in preparation for this race and he believed he was well prepared to resume racing. Mr Chmiel said he believed it was unlikely his runner could beat the better supported horses in the race and then added that he had intended to advise viewers he anticipated LAYTONS CRUSADER would derive considerable benefit from the run but had erred in his choice of words. After considering the evidence available Stewards reminded Mr Chmiel of his obligations when engaging with the media.
Supplementary:
Rangiora HRC - Sunday, 14th August 2016
Race 7 - OXFORD MOBILE PACE
Stewards have concluded their enquiries into the tactics adopted by driver S Golding in the middle stages when electing to maintain his position in the two wide line despite the slow sectionals being dictated with very fast final sectionals being run resulting in DOUBLE SHOT finishing 4th 2.5L from the winner. Mr Golding advised Stewards that during the week he had driven this mare to win a trial at Ashburton by restraining in the early stages and using her sprint to finish well. Mr Golding advised that in this race he had been instructed to drive the mare in a similar manner as the connections felt this was her most preferred racing style. These comments were confirmed by trainer C Dalgety. Mr Golding further added despite the slow times being dictated in the middle stages he felt at the time he was still within close enough range of the leaders to overhaul them in the final straight. After considering video evidence and the submissions of Mr Golding and Mr Dalgety, Stewards advised Mr Golding that in future it was expected he be able to better adapt to the changing circumstances of a race which would lessen the likelihood of his drives being open to query.
Gore HRC - Sunday, 21st August 2016
Race 8 - goSTALLIONS / FOOD AFFAIR PACE
Trainer M Jones has advised Stewards that NICAEA FRANCO has recovered well following its disappointing performance last weekend at Gore, citing the rise in class as the main reason for its final placing. Mr Jones added that the mare will have another start next week before he reconsiders her racing future.
