Race 2 - OXFORD CLUB TROT
Stewards have concluded their investigation into the manner in which MERLOT was driven in the home straight. Stewards concerns were centred around the lack of vigour on Ms Newton's part over the concluding stages. MERLOT was placed 2nd 0.2L behind the winning DIANA HARBOUR. Ms Newton explained to Stewards that the horse had hung inwards throughout the entire run home and demonstrated on the films that when she had placed the gelding under pressure in the early stages of the final straight it had shifted inwards a considerable margin. Ms Newton then explained she had been able, after some time, to straighten her horse in an attempt to improve its position however it had still been inclined to hang inwards. Due to this she advised she had been reluctant to place the horse under any more pressure due to their close proximity to the sulky of DIANA HARBOUR as she was wary of the horse shifting in further. Stewards also spoke with trainer K Hadfield who advised that due to its inclination to shift inwards he intended to make alterations to the horse's steering equipment and add some blinds to its gear. After extensively reviewing the video coverage and the evidence tendered by Driver L Newton and Trainer K Hadfield, Stewards determined that Ms Newton's actions in the circumstances were not unreasonable and deemed that she had been unable to fully test the gelding due to its behaviour. Accordingly no further action was required other than to remind Ms Newton that in future if there was anything which may have affected her runner's performance she was to notify Stewards at the earliest opportunity.
