Race 5 - GF & J McMASTER & HALSWELL CATHOLIC PARISH MOBILE PACE
Stewards have concluded their investigation into an incident near the 250 metres which resulted in GUNPOWDER being checked and losing its chance. Stewards have determined that in the early stages of the run home KINGI HONE KIRA (S McNally) shifted outwards which took EASY RIDER (R Butt) over extra ground. This resulted in PAY ME DIRECT (B Orange), who was racing very roughly, being crowded for racing room and then breaking. Stewards were not convinced that the outwards movement from runners was the primary reason for PAY ME DIRECT galloping. Notwithstanding this, S McNally was advised that in future he was to display a higher level of care when shifting outwards. Simultaneous to this movement PICCADILLY PRINCESS, who was racing wide on the track, was hanging inwards strongly despite the corrective intentions of driver T Williams and caused GUNPOWDER to become poorly positioned near the sulky of PAY ME DIRECT resulting in heavy contact and the breaking of this horse. This incident was caused solely by the racing manners of PICCADILLY PRINCESS and no driver was found to be at fault.

A false start was declared when NORTHVIEW GAMBLER reared and became entangled in the sulky of MAVERICK just prior to the barrier being released. A subsequent veterinary examination of NORTHVIEW GAMBLER cleared the gelding to race.
Shortly after this LITTLE RASCAL shifted outwards and made contact with THE ROYAL GARDEN, with LITTLE RASCAL being sent to the unruly by the Starter.
After the runners were recalled SOUTHERN GNP reared and fell heavily to the track. The gelding was deemed a late scratching on veterinary advice. SOUTHERN GNP is required to satisfactorily complete a standing start trial prior to next racing from this type of start.
The restart was further delayed when the sulky on ROYAL COUNSEL required replacing.
The start was further delayed when several runners displayed poor barrier manners. LITTLE RASCAL and NORTHVIEW GAMBLER will now be drawn unruly for standing starts, with LITTLE RASCAL and ALOTBETTOR also required to trial from a standing start to a satisfactory standard prior to being eligible to race from that start type again. J Dunn as the driver of NO DOCTOR NEEDED advised Stewards that due to his gelding over-racing throughout he had been unable to activate the hopple shorteners.
C DeFilippi reported he had been unable to activate the removable deafeners on DELIGHTFUL DASH due to the cord becoming entangled.
Stewards questioned G Smith as the driver of VENUS SERENA regarding his decision not to accept cover from the improving BRILLIANT STRIKE in the middle stages and instead remain positioned to the outside of the leader. Mr Smith explained his instructions had been to drive the horse in a forwards manner when circumstances permitted as previously that was how the mare had raced best. Mr Smith further added that he felt that VENUS SERENA would benefit from a strong pace throughout as opposed to the race turning into a sprint home which he believes supported his decision to maintain a strong tempo at this time. Mr Smith said he had also been reluctant to restrain the mare due to it previously choking down in a race situation adding that he had been very disappointed with its efforts over the final stages. Stewards noted the comments of Mr Smith and will follow up with trainer G Dunn regarding the recovery of this horse in the coming days.
