Race Comments
Race 1 MT HUTT TROTTING CLUB TROT Video  Video
CHINA EXPRESS and BRYLINS CHOICE broke as the start was effected.
IT'S HOW YOU USE IT and TOPNOTCH TITAN broke shortly after the start.
IT'S HOW YOU USE IT and SQUAW broke racing into the first bend.
SQUIRE JOHN broke briefly nearing the 2000 metres when leading and had to be restrained by driver P Wakelin. This gelding broke again briefly nearing the 1600 metres.
IT'S HOW YOU USE IT broke again nearing the 500 metres.
MOMENTOUS trotted awkwardly over the early stages of the run home.
EARLY INVASION trotted roughly in the early stages of the run home, and then hung inwards under pressure over the final stages.
PRECIOUS MOMENT trotted roughly over the concluding stages before breaking nearing the 200 metres.
SQUIRE JOHN had difficulty obtaining clear racing room over the final 150 metres when racing in restricted room between YANKEE COMMANDO and EARLY INVASION.
Stewards questioned M Edmonds as the driver of YANKEE COMMANDO regarding the tactics he employed near the 1800 metres when after reaching the front he immediately surrendered that position to the improving PRECIOUS MOMENT, but a short distance afterwards shifted outwards to take his gelding forwards to lead again. Mr Edmonds explained it had been his intention to race his gelding with cover however after surrendering the lead to PRECIOUS MOMENT his gelding commenced to over-race and this, combined with PRECIOUS MOMENT relaxing the pace of the race left him with little option but to allow his horse to improve again. After reviewing the films, Stewards accepted the explanation and took the matter no further.
Stewards questioned P Wakelin as the driver of SQUIRE JOHN regarding her decision to persist with attempting a marginal run in the middle stages of the run home when it appeared that suitable racing room existed inside of YANKEE COMMANDO if she had made any attempt to restrain her runner. Ms Wakelin explained that the gelding had hung inwards leaving the final bend despite her efforts to improve outwards which is where she felt she was most likely to gain clear racing room. She added that SQUIRE JOHN had then raced roughly which caused her to steady her runner, however by this stage the horse which was travelling well had become established to the outside of YANKEE COMMANDO's sulky wheel. Ms Wakelin further added that the gelding had paced and broken twice already in the early and middle stages of this race which she felt may have been a result of the horse being shod during the week. After considering Ms Wakelin's explanation and her horse's poor recent racing record Stewards accepted that whilst she had erred in not attempting to shift ground the reasons for this were not unreasonable in the circumstances. Notwithstanding this, Stewards advised Ms Wakelin that in future it was expected when sufficient room did exist she was to make a greater effort to allow her runner the opportunity to improve its position.

Race 2 FULTON HOGAN 2YO MOBILE PACE Video  Video
DREAMY DAMIEN broke nearing the 400 metres losing its chance.
THISGIRLISONFIRE was held up for clear racing room through the early stages of the run home and had to be shifted wider near the 150 metres to improve its position.
When questioned regarding the performance of JANICES CULLEN, driver S Ottley could offer no explanation other than to report she was disappointed with the filly's efforts. The connections of this filly were advised that due to the manner the filly had completed its preliminary and its behaviour in the pre-race circle it was now required to trial satisfactorily from a mobile. Stable representative J Dunn reported the filly would now be turned out for a spell.
D Dunn as the driver of I WILL ROCK YOU reported that he had not activated the blinds or deafeners on the gelding.

Race 3 BROSNAN TRANSPORT MOBILE PACE Video  Video
MATTJESTIC BREEZE hung inwards under pressure rounding the final bend contacting several pylons. When questioned regarding the performance of this mare, driver C Thornley advised that the mare had raced in a similar fashion to the first day at Blenheim and had been very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to detect any abnormalities. Trainer J Gameson advised he would be returning the mare to the workouts prior to it resuming.
Horseman N McGrath dropped his foot momentarily when activating the removable gear on CURLIMORE.

Race 4 ARTHUR CATES LTD PACE Video  Video
THE KATZ PYJAMAZ paced roughly through the early stages.
ROCK DIVA broke approaching the first bend and lost considerable ground.
AUTOMATIC paced roughly nearing the 600 metres.
GUCCI CAVALLO (T McMillan) raced fiercely and hung outwards on the final bend which in turn then shifted HANGOVER (C Thornley) wider in the early stages of the run home to obtain clear running. T McMillan explained that the gelding had proved uncontrollable at this time which he had attributed to gear changes made since the gelding last raced. Mr McMillan further added that he had recommended to trainer W Stevenson a change of bit for the horse's next start. Notwithstanding the racing manners of GUCCI CAVALLO, Stewards spoke to T McMillan and reminded him to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
ATCHOO struck and dislodged a pylon on the final bend. Driver C DeFilippi was spoken to advisedly and warned in future to make a greater effort to ensure he does not strike pylons.
GUCCI CAVALLO and ROCK DIVA were held up for clear racing room through the early and middle stages of the run home.
CAESAR'S JADE hung inwards in the early stages of the run home and then broke passing the 220 metres losing its chance. A warning was placed on the mare's racing record.
S Golding (ROCK DIVA) was issued with and admitted a breach of Rule 867, the details of which were that he drove the final 200 metres of the race with his foot free of the sulky foot-rest with the JCA imposing a fine of $100.
Stewards delayed the all clear until it was confirmed that ROCK DIVA had not been in breach of the Breaking Horse Regulations when breaking through the early stages.

Race 5 JP MCGILLAN AGRICULTURAL SPRAYING MOBILE PACE Video  Video
KOTARE MAHDI broke briefly as the start was effected losing ground. A warning was placed on the gelding's mobile barrier record.
WEBB ELLIS raced keenly through the middle stages.
KOTARE MAHDI weakened passing the 700 metres. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, driver J Dunn reported that in his opinion KOTARE MAHDI had been less than genuine in its efforts throughout and it was his intention to remove the gelding from their training establishment. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
GUNPOWDER hung inwards early in the run home and was held up for a short distance in consequence.
SHEZALEGEND raced roughly on several occasions throughout the run home.

Race 6 TOM GUNDRY FREIGHT WINTER CUP (HANDICAP PACE) Video  Video
MOON ANGEL broke briefly as the start was effected.
CANNDEW was held up on the final bend for clear racing room and through the early stages of the run home by the weakening MOON ANGEL.
Stewards questioned D Dunn regarding the run of TINTINARA, Mr Dunn explained that the filly had been unsuited to the fast tempo being set through the middle stages and felt it would have been detrimental to his chance to improve wide sooner than he had done so.

Race 7 TURF BAR AT HOTEL ASHBURTON HANDICAP TROT Video  Video
PAMMYS BOY broke over the early stages.
EILISH AIMEE broke when negotiating the first bend.
EILISH AIMEE broke again nearing the 250 metres.
The all clear was delayed when trainer B Graham and driver M Love advised the Stewards they felt PETERHOF had been denied a fair start. After viewing video footage they did not wish to proceed the matter any further, and accordingly placings were duly authorised.
P Davis was spoken to for the manner he drove near the 1900 metres when he allowed SARAH PALIN to be positioned on the sulky wheel of EXPLOSIVE STAR for some distance.

Race 8 ASHBURTON SECURITY PACE Video  Video
EARTHSHAKER broke as the start was effected. A warning was placed on the gelding's barrier record.
B Orange briefly dropped his foot when activating gear on FAIR DINKUM BROMAC in the early stages of the run home.
