PYRAMID MONARCH raced inside several pylons on the final bend when improving it's position to the inside of the leader ZHENYA. After reviewing the films Stewards lodged a protest against 3rd placing being awarded to PYRAMID MONARCH alleging it had gained an advantage by protruding inside the markers on the bend and improving it's position when sufficient room did not exist. After considering the films and the explanation of driver B Williamson (assisted by senior horseman N Williamson) the JCA upheld the protest and disqualified PYRAMID MONARCH from the event.
Stewards questioned M Williamson as the driver of ZHENYA regarding his horse shifting wider leaving the final bend. Mr Williamson explained that he had deliberately maintained a position some distance off the pylons once assuming the lead near the 1400 metres due to a thick build up of track material on the very inside. Mr Williamson further advised that leaving the final bend PYRAMID MONARCH had become awkwardly positioned to his inside and so he had shifted wider to relieve the pressure on that runner After reviewing the films and his submissions Stewards accepted his explanation.
A charge was laid under Rule 869(7A)(a) & (b) against Junior Horseman B Williamson alleging he had shifted PYRAMID MONARCH to the inside of several pylons on the final bend and gained an advantage through improving it's position when not entitled to do so. After hearing from the Stewards and drivers B Williamson (assisted by N Williamson) and M Williamson the JCA upheld the charge and fined Mr B Williamson the sum of $250.
