SKY ART, after racing fiercely in the score up and the early stages, broke for several strides 200 metres after the start after contacting the sulky of KINGSTON which it was trailing.
SIRIUS STAR was improved three wide without cover inside the 1500 metres and paced roughly passing the 1300 metres before improving to race one out without cover. This colt then gave ground inside the last 300 metres. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
TWOANDAHALF TIGERS was held up over the early stages of the run home until inside the last 100 metres.

THE CROWN JEWELS was inclined to lay out over the concluding stages.
TWELVE MONKEYS broke passing the 300 metres losing its chance.
Driver A. Herlihy (THE ALMIGHTY JOHNSON) was questioned as to why he did not activate the removable deafeners on the second placed THE ALMIGHTY JOHNSON. Mr Herlihy explained that the gelding gave him a difficult drive, laying in on the bends and laying out in the straights, and that the gelding was particularly bad rounding the home bend when it contacted three pylons. When he finally got THE ALMIGHTY JOHNSON balanced in the run home, he thought it more prudent not to activate the deafeners as it was inclined to lay out, but encourage it with the whip by tapping the horse up. In the circumstances the Stewards accepted his explanation.

Race 3 AUCKLAND CO-OP TAXI 300-3000 FILLIES & MARES MOBILE PACE Video  Video
Trainer A. McCollum was charged a colour fee of $25.00 for BLUE ALLAN.

CYCLONE LUCKY SEVEN broke at the start losing several lengths.
MOMENT OF TRUTH was improved early to race in the lead with 1200 metres to run, when challenged by TERESKOVA for the lead inside the 600 metres, weakened allowing GINTARAS to improve on its inside. MOMENT OF TRUTH trotted roughly and broke for several strides inside the 400 metres momentarily placing MAKAREWA JAKE in restricted room.
Driver M. McKendry was reminded of his obligation to keep his feet in the sulky foot rest in regard to his drive on YAGUNNAKISSMEORNOT over the early stages of the race.

Race 5 ALABAR FILLIES & MARES MOBILE PACE Video  Video
ARMS OF AN ANGEL was challenged for the lead between the 1600 metres and 1200 metres by CHARLESTON BELLE. CHARLESTON BELLE was then eased to three deep on the running line passing the 1100 metres. Approaching the 1000 metres ARMS OF AN ANGEL raced erratically when in the lead causing checks to the trailing runners, STARS AND SOUND, CHARLESTON BELLE, CTHEBALLERINA and CULINARY DELIGHT. CHARLESTON BELLE broke losing considerable ground and its chance. Leaving the back straight for the last time, ARMS OF AN ANGEL then raced three wide and hung inwards briefly contacting the sulky of CYCLONE KATE and then veered outward wider on the track losing its chance.
An investigation was held into the racing performance of ARMS OF AN ANGEL and the driving tactics adopted by its driver, S. Abernethy and Driver J. Stormont with CHARLESTON BELLE. It was established that after a quick opening sectional, Driver S. Abernethy briefly eased ARMS OF AN ANGEL in the lead and then was challenged by Driver J. Stormont (CHARLESTON BELLE). CHARLESTON BELLE then raced outside and forward of ARMS OF AN ANGEL but was unable to cross that runner as it had commenced to over-race with 1400 metres to run resulting in Driver J. Stormont easing back to three deep on the running line. As both runners failed to complete the race either through its racing manners (ARMS OF AN ANGEL) or being interfered with (CHARLESTON BELLE), Stewards could not establish the effect of the driving tactics adopted in this incident. A post-race veterinary examination of ARMS OF AN ANGEL revealed no abnormality. Trainers J. and M. Teaz were advised that ARMS OF AN ANGEL had been stood down for 14 days.
