It was established that TOUCH OF SUCCESS had veered out after TAYLAHS GIRL had commenced to shift ground outwards, possibly after having contacted the sulky of TAYLAHS GIRL. After considering the matter blame could not be solely attributed to any individual horse or driver therefore no further action was taken other than to note the circumstances.

An investigation was held into the tactics adopted by Drivers J Abernethy (CHEVRON EXCITES) and G Small (HVAR) when racing down the back straight the first time after both runners contested for the lead until near the 1000 metres where HVAR was eased. Mr Abernethy explained that his driving instructions had been to lead and look to hold the front, and that when challenged by HVAR he had initially looked to maintain the lead however when he then looked to hand up near the 1200 metres CHEVRON EXCITES had commenced to race fiercely which meant he was unable to allow HVAR to cross. Mr Abernethy further stated that he had not been required to drive CHEVRON EXCITES along to any degree to maintain the lead as the gelding had been travelling under restraint and was at a loss to explain the poor performance other than that the gelding may not have backed up from the first night. Mr Small stated that after crossing to race outside the leader near the 1500 metres he had elected to drive forward to see if the lead was obtainable and had then raced on terms with CHEVRON EXCITES until entering the front straight near the 1200 metres where he felt that Driver J Abernethy had indicated that the lead was available, however CHEVRON EXCITES had then over-raced badly which meant he had little option other than to ease HVAR and race without cover. Mr Small further stated that HVAR had then dropped the bit racing past the 800 metres and commenced to give ground. CHEVRON EXCITES and HVAR both tired badly racing down the back the final time and underwent post race veterinary examinations which revealed no clinical abnormalities to either gelding. After considering the matter it was decided to place a warning against the racing performance of both geldings with the respective explanations of both Drivers noted.
