Racing towards the 50 metres CORROBOREE was dictated outwards by CLASSIELEA resulting in checks to TOOT TOOT and GUNPOWDER with both runners having to be restrained. CORROBOREE broke soon afterwards. Stewards questioned driver N McGrath (CLASSIELEA), G Smith (CORROBOREE) and B Butt (TOOT TOOT) regarding this incident and after considering their explanations issued Mr McGrath with a charge. The details of which were that he had driven carelessly over the concluding stages by allowing his horse to shift outwards causing interference to the outside runners. Mr McGrath admitted the breach and after hearing submissions on penalty the JCA imposed a fine of $250.
Stewards questioned driver R May (MATTY GROVES) regarding the tactics he employed passing the 350 metres when shifting from the three wide position with cover down the track to race in the two wide line following TOOT TOOT and CORROBOREE. From this point on MATTY GROVES was unable to gain any clear racing room to the finishing line. After considering the explanation of Mr May and trainer B Hill who was also questioned, Stewards adjourned the matter to make further enquiries.
