(THATS BETTOR) was questioned in relation to the manner in which he had driven on the final turn when leading after MACH CRUISER obtained an inside run when THATS BETTOR shifted outwards. Mr Abernethy stated that THATS BETTOR had tended to shift outwards on the bends throughout the running and that when GOLDEN DELIGHT commenced to give ground and he had then placed THATS BETTOR under pressure when tried with the whip, that the gelding had then shifted out which enabled MACH CRUISER to improve to his inside. Mr Abernethy further stated that he had been unaware as to who the trailing runner was as he had thought that MACH CRUISER had been restrained back towards the rear after unsuccessfully challenging for the position outside the leader racing down the back straight the first time. After viewing the replays and considering Mr Abernethy's explanation he was warned for the manner in which he had driven and he was instructed to display greater control in similar circumstances in the future. Mr Abernethy admitted a charge under Rule 869(2)(a) in that he used his whip excessively over the final 400 metres with the JCA imposing a fine of $200. | Driver S Abernethy|
