BETA B QUICK, which had shown early gate speed to lead, tired badly from the 900 metres to finish at the rear. Driver J Abernethey (BETA B QUICK) was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted and in a particular in relation to his decision to hold the lead when challenged near the 2100 metres by VIBE (favourite). BETA B QUICK was then headed near the 1000 metres when AMBRO COURAGE improved forward before commencing to tire from the 900 metres. Mr Abernethy stated that BETA B QUICK had raced best in the past when able to lead as the gelding had an aversion to having grit thrown back into it's face and wore gear to address this issue. Mr Abernethy further stated that VIBE had only challenged for a brief distance and that he was disappointed with the performance as he felt BETA B QUICK should still have been far more competitive. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Mr Abernethy was advised that his drive had caused Stewards concern as it was felt that he would have been better served to have handed up to VIBE, however no further action was taken on this occasion other than to place a warning against the racing performance of BETA B QUICK.
VIBE (favourite), after unsuccessfully challenging for the lead near the 2100 metres, was able to shift down to trail the leader before then shifting away from the marker line passing the 1000 metres when BETA B QUICK commenced to weaken. VIBE was then held up racing down the back the final time and also on the final turn before finishing on strongly when clear into third place beaten 1.9 lengths. Driver A Herlihy was questioned as to whether he gave consideration to shifting out to follow RANGI RANGDU near the 950 metres prior to being covered by improving runners. Mr Herlihy stated that he had been mindful that VIBE had raced keenly earlier in the running and that he did not want to be left three wide without cover if RANGI RANGDU was able to cross to race outside the leader as he felt that VIBE would be unable to sustain it's run should that eventuate.

Driver A Herlihy (CYAMACH - favourite) was queried regarding his apparent lack of vigour over the early and middle stages of the run home when challenging along the passing lane. Mr Herlihy stated that this was his first drive on CYAMACH which was a sit-sprint type and that he had been instructed by Co-trainer S Telfer to save the gelding up for as late as possible for one run. Mr Herlihy further stated that CYAMACH had been travelling well when improving along the passing lane to hit the front inside the 100 metres but had then come to the end of it's run which resulted in him then activating the deafeners and turning and applying the whip just prior to the winning post. Mr Herlihy also added that CYAMACH had not responded when the deafeners were released nor when struck with the whip. Evidence was also heard from Co-trainer S Telfer who confirmed the instructions given to Mr Herlihy and also in relation to the racing manners of CYAMACH which he advised had been less than genuine on occasions in the past and in particular when tested with the whip. This matter was adjourned to enable Stewards to review CYAMACH's previous racing.

VIEWFIELD APACHE or OUR SOUTHERN MAN. | No claims were lodged for|
VIEWFIELD APACHE over-raced during the middle stages when midfield.
An investigation was held into several incidents near the 1300 metres where STORMY BREEZE, BANDANA and OUR SOUTHERN MAN shifted ground outwards with AMERICAN ANGEL and COUGAR BROMAC racing four wide briefly. It was established that Junior Driver D Ferguson (STORMY BREEZE) had commenced his outward movement prior to AMERICAN ANGEL covering his sulky wheel with AMERICAN ANGEL then continuing forward to a four wide position briefly before being restrained down onto the back of STORMY BREEZE. It was further established that BANDANA had been obliged to follow STORMY BREEZE out to a three wide position for a short distance after OUR SOUTHERN MAN had shifted ground away from the peg line. After considering the matter no further action was deemed necessary other than to remind Junior Driver S Kane (OUR SOUTHERN MAN) of his obligations when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
CULLIES DELIGHT and OUR SOUTHERN MAN were held up for clear racing room in the run home.
