Race 1 - TOPLINE FENCING LTD HANDICAP TROT
Driver B Wallace was issued with a charge under Rule 868(2) alleging that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure RUBY'S JEWEL was given full opportunity to obtain the best possible placing when failing to show sufficient vigour between the 300 metres and 50 metres of the race. After reserving their decision on race day, the JCA have considered all the evidence and dismissed the charge.

Race 1 SBS BANK RURAL TROT Video  Video 
After 150 metres SOUTHLAND REFLECTOR broke with MOA BONES breaking shortly afterwards resulting in both these runners losing any realistic chance in the event.
OCH AYE THE NOO hung rounding the bends.
OCH AYE THE NOO was denied racing room rounding the final bend.
With approximately 80 metres to run GREY POWER broke when challenging the leading division with driver N Williamson reporting the gelding had cast a shoe.
B Williamson (FATHER CHRISTMAS) was warned for being late to the marshalling area prior to the start pursuant to the Race Starting Procedure Regulations (2).
 
Race 2 NORTHERN SOUTHLAND'S VETS MOBILE PACE Video  Video 
Racing into the first bend LIGHTNING FLIGHT became awkwardly placed to the outside of A DAMN GOOD EXCUSE and had to be steadied.
The favourite TACT TATE raced keenly throughout the running with driver T Chmiel confirming that this had contributed to the gelding tiring over the final stages.
RED ELECTRIC gave ground rapidly over the concluding stages of the race with Stewards ordering a veterinary examination of the filly which revealed no abnormalities.
COOL CHANGES which was racing three deep on the inside was unable to obtain racing room round the final bend before improving into the Passing Lane with 200 metres to run.
PRIVATE JET had to shift ground over the final 150 metres to obtain clear racing room.
 
Race 3 GRINALDI LODGE TROT Video  Video 
MASS INVASION broke badly at the start and took no serious part in the race.
LARCH broke with 500 metres to run.
STARLIGHT INVASION hung inwards and struck several pylons rounding the final bend.
N Williamson reported he elected not to activate the removable deafeners on POPPYMALDA due to having the field covered.
Driver R Norman (ANOTHERSUPERSTAR) was warned to change his whip action and ensure he uses the whip within the confines of the sulky.
 
Race 4 GORE NEW WORLD HANDICAP PACE Video  Video 
WHO KNOWS, ACOLYTE and DELIGHTFUL DASH broke at the start with SHARDS PHOENIX tangling away.
EVEN FLO veered out sharply shortly after the start to avoid the breaking WHO KNOWS.
WHO KNOWS paced roughly for a few strides racing into the first bend before breaking again and losing all chance.
ADD NO INTEREST (B Barclay) briefly raced wider on the track after LIVY FRANCO (N Williamson) improved on its inside. The Stewards after reviewing the replays in this incident were satisfied Mr Williamson had shifted ground outwards prior to ADD NO INTEREST moving to the outside of his sulky wheel.
With approximately 650 metres to run TAKE AFTER ME (B Orange) shifted ground outwards simultaneously as ADD NO INTEREST (B Barclay) shifted inwards to take up the position left vacant by the tiring ACOLYTE. As a result ADD NO INTEREST broke with driver B Barclay apportioning no blame to TAKE AFTER ME which had improved on his inner. As a result of ADD NO INTEREST breaking MILLIGAN, LIVY FRANCO and MACH OF THE MAN all had to take evasive action. The Stewards reviewed the incident and were satisfied no horseman was at fault and no further action was required.
GROOMSMAN was held up round the final bend before finishing strongly in the home straight.
Following the running of this event co-trainer J Cox reported WHO KNOWS was in a distressed state with a subsequent veterinary examination revealing the mare to be showing signs of a respiratory infection.
 
Race 5 KINA CRAIG STUD SOUTHERN BELLE SPEED SERIES Video  Video 
VAN EVA after racing in the parked position for the majority of the race commenced to give ground from the 500 metres with REAL INTENTIONS and TACT CHARLOTTE being briefly inconvenienced by the tiring runner.
DIGITAL ART which was racing three deep was unable to gain any racing room rounding the final bend.
JUSTALITTLEBETTOR was denied racing room throughout the final bend and over the early stages of the run home then paced roughly just short of the winning post when being restrained.
Passing the 200 metres B D WINDERMERE lay inwards and had to be straightened by driver A Armour resulting in B D WINDERMERE briefly losing its momentum.
Just short of the winning post DIGITAL ART had to shift ground sharply when looking for clear racing room.
 
Race 6 NEVILLE CLEAVER FISHING MOBILE PACE Video  Video 
TOUR DIRECTOR was a late scratching at 12.10pm on veterinary advice with a Veterinary Certificate supplied.
BILLY KLONDIKE raced without the notified removable deafeners after the horse became fractious in the stabling area and trainer N Bishop was unable to apply the deafeners on the gelding.
ART EXHIBIT raced in tight quarters throughout the home straight with driver G Lee advising he did not activate the removable deafeners.
 
Race 7 YALDHURST HOTEL NORTHERN SOUTHLAND CUP (HANDICAP PACE) Video  Video 
THE WRATH OF ROBYN broke at the start losing considerable ground.
MIGHTY FLYING MAC was slow to begin from the 40 metre mark.
DEVIL MAY CARE also broke over the early stages.
Racing into the first bend JANGO FETT paced roughly then broke before settling midfield.
THE WRATH OF ROBYN made the bend awkwardly passing the 500 metres and paced roughly for a few strides resulting in driver C Ferguson having to restrain the gelding.
BETTOR'S BRIGADIER commenced to give ground over the final 400 metres with the Stewards requesting a veterinary examination of BETTOR'S BRIGADIER after it appeared awkward in its gait when being pulled up following the race. The subsequent examination revealed BETTOR'S BRIGADIER to have some swelling in the off-fore tendon region. The Stewards will keep in contact with trainer D McLachlan in the upcoming days to monitor the condition of BETTOR'S BRIGADIER.
MOSSDALE CONNER was held up rounding the final bend before improving its position wide from the 400 metres.
ONEDIN MACH hung inwards and struck pylons just prior to the Passing Lane.
When questioned regarding the performance of MIGHTY FLYING MAC, driver D Dunn reported that the gelding had been slow to begin which had added to its 40 metres handicap and with the race being run in a track record he was not overly disappointed considering the above circumstances.
METICULOUS was removed from the Unruly for future standing starts at the request of co-trainer M Purdon.
 
Race 8 PGG WRIGHTSON AON INSURANCE BROKERS MOBILE PACE Video  Video 
SOUTHERN GNP (B Orange) which was caught three wide without cover through the early stages paced roughly before improving to the lead passing the 1600 metres. After reaching the lead SOUTHERN GNP continued to pace roughly throughout while leading.
LUCKY LANDS briefly raced three wide nearing the 1600 metres when the field was racing loosely and STATHAM moved to the parked position prior to LUCKY LANDS reaching its sulky wheel.
CHANGE THE RULZ and I'M FULL OF EXCUSES were unable to gain clear racing room rounding the final bend until the 300 metres.
SOUTHERN GNP which was leading broke with approximately 350 metres to run. As a result ANOTHER WINDERMERE (M Williamson) which was trailing the breaking SOUTHERN GNP shifted ground outwards to avoid the breaking SOUTHERN GNP. PRINCESS ARTS (D Dunn) and JACKS SALUTE (R Swain) were forced wider on the track by ANOTHER WINDERMERE. OHOKA ROYAL which was racing to the outside of JACKS SALUTE ran out of racing room and was checked and broke resulting in OHOKA ROYAL (B Barclay) locking wheels with NUREYEV (A Armour).
Stewards requested a veterinary examination of SOUTHERN GNP with no clinical abnormalities revealed with trainer K Barron being advised a warning was placed on the racing manners of SOUTHERN GNP.
 
Race 9 KINA CRAIG STUD SOUTHERN LIGHTS HANDICAP TROT Video  Video 
SIR LEXINGTON broke at the start and failed to settle for a considerable distance losing all chance.
DWINDLE MIST broke through the early stages before settling near the back of the field.
Racing into the first bend MR MAYFLY hung inwards and struck pylons.
Approaching the 2400 metres EYRE I COME broke losing all chance with driver B Orange retiring EYRE I COME from the race. When questioned regarding the breaking of EYRE I COME, Mr Orange advised the gelding had been hanging on the bends which he believed had caused the horse to break.
Nearing the 2200 metres the favourite KING DENNY trotted roughly then broke, stumbling on several occasions and losing its chance. Driver M Purdon was unable to offer any explanation for the breaking of the gelding.
SPRINGBANK SAM raced keenly at the back of the field throughout.
DAVEY'S GIFT commenced to give ground from the 700 metres then trotted roughly and broke, briefly inconveniencing the trailing EXPERIMENT, MR MAYFLY and SPRINGBANK SAM.
VULCAN was held up by the tiring MOMENT OF SUN passing the 400 metres.
EXPERIMENT (D Dunn) raced in restricted room rounding the final bend and over the early stages of the run home.
Driver B Butt (VULCAN) was warned for the manner he shifted ground passing the 400 metres when placing EXPERIMENT in tight quarters.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of SPRINGBANK SAM trainer/driver P Williamson advised the gelding had run an improved race at its previous start, had worked well in the lead up to today, had received an economical trip and also appreciated the distance of today's race over the 3200 metre journey.
 
Race 10 BALFOUR TAVERN & MOTELS MOBILE PACE Video  Video 
Racing into the first bend RISK FACTOR (K Larsen) struck and dislodged a pylon when racing in restricted room on the inside of IN THE KITTY (S Walkinshaw) and SOMEARDENSOMEWHERE (N Rasmussen) with the dislodged pylon striking driver A Beck (I SMART) before falling on the track.
PULP FICTION (D Dunn) also had to take evasive action to avoid the pylon.
JUST NED which trailed from the 1700 metres over-raced before commencing to give ground from the 800 metres.
Passing the 700 metres RISK FACTOR which had shifted ground outwards to avoid the tiring JUST NED broke with HUDSON SULLY having to shift ground sharply to avoid the breaking runner.
ULTRA SHOK was momentarily held up prior to the home straight.
Stewards questioned drivers K Larsen and N Rasmussen in relation to the incident where the pylon was dislodged on the first bend. Miss Rasmussen advised the Stewards that SOMEARDENSOMEWHERE had been racing greenly racing into the bend and that she had taken corrective actions as soon as practical. After reviewing the available footage the Stewards reminded Ms Rasmussen of her obligations to ensure she leaves sufficient room for runners on her inside.
