The start was delayed when AREION had some difficulty addressing the barriers. This horse then broke shortly after the start and again on several occasions during the running. Driver C Thornley advised Stewards that the horse would be restricted to mobile racing for its upcoming starts. Mr Thornley also added the horse had resented the track kickback and he would be recommending gear changes to trainer K Nyhan. Stewards placed a warning on the barrier record of this gelding.
LOUIE FINN had a warning placed on its standing start manners after being difficult in the pre-race circle. This gelding then broke at the start.
SIFTY TUESDAY shifted inwards abruptly over the early stages and locked wheels with MAPUA MABEL resulting in the left sulky wheel of SIFTY TUESDAY buckling which extinguished that horse's chance. BEST DEFENCE and A BETTER LOVER were checked in this incident and as a result settled near the back of the field. Stewards placed a warning on the barrier record of SIFTY TUESDAY. Trainer/Driver G Smith reported that he would be removing the murphy blind from this horse prior to it racing on the second day.
GO GIRL broke at the start and then again near the 500 metres. Driver J Curtin reported the mare had over-raced and hung throughout and proved difficult to steer. Stewards placed a warning on the racing record of this horse.
MY HORSE MY RULES and INKBERROW also broke at the start and lost ground. SHADOWMAN was checked as a result of this and had to shift wider on the track.

SANTORINI SUNSET trotted roughly over the concluding stages with Driver D Dunn advising he refrained from activating the removable deafeners on this gelding due to this.

Race 6 NELSON OTB / STIHL SHOP RICHMOND PACE Video  Video
LADY GODIVA was fractious behind the barriers with the mare breaking its boring pole which was removed for the race. A warning was placed on the mare's barrier record.
LITTLE LION MAN broke at the start and lost ground.
WEBB ELLIS began awkwardly and shifted outwards onto the grass track for some distance in the early stages. This required the gelding to manoeuvre his way around the starter's vehicle. As a result this gelding settled at the rear of the field. WEBB ELLIS then raced fiercely through the middle stages.
Third placing being awarded to LITTLE LION MAN was withheld until it could be confirmed the gelding had not breached the breaking horse regulations in the early stages.
There was a further delay to the payment of dividends when co-trainer M Kerr filed a Request for a Ruling with the JCA alleging that his runner WEBB ELLIS had been denied a fair start. After considering the submissions of Mr Kerr, driver D Dunn, the Starter P Lamb and the Stewards the JCA ruled that WEBB ELLIS had not been denied a fair start and that it should be declared a runner. The placings were accordingly cleared. Stewards placed a warning on the barrier record of WEBB ELLIS.

TOUGH ENOUGH broke after being eased wider on the track by EASTBURN MARA. Stewards spoke with drivers C Thornley and M Jones regarding this where it was established that TOUGH ENOUGH had been hanging inwards at the time when EASTBURN MARA held a clear advantage and shifted out in a gradual manner. Accordingly no further action was required.

PAY ME SUSH was inclined to hang inwards severely rounding the final turn.
Horseman T Chmiel was spoken to regarding the manner in which he drove over the final stages when his foot was viewed to make contact with the hind leg of THAT GUY FINN. Mr Chmiel explained that due to the time constraints between races trainer J Howe had borrowed a sulky which had suited his runner but not been set up for him to drive in. Chmiel added that he had made attempts throughout the preliminary to resolve the issue but despite this he was still only just able to reach the sulky footrests during the running. Chmiel said that over the final stages when placing THAT GUY FINN under a particularly vigorous drive his foot had slipped and contacted the off hind leg. Stewards accepted that there had been no intent on Mr Chmiel's part to remove his foot from the rest and that it had simply slipped due to considerable movement from him. Stewards also accepted that any contact that was made had been accidental. Because of these factors Stewards deemed that no further action was required other than to advise him to make a better effort to ensure that the sulky was appropriately set up in future to avoid a recurrence of this.

FRANCO SALISBURY, JOHNNY FOX and MAIDEN ROME all broke at the start and lost ground.
MAJOR BUBBLES raced roughly at various stages throughout this event and was inclined to lay in throughout the run home. When questioned regarding the performance of this gelding Driver D Dunn advised that his gelding had raced lethargically throughout which had caused it to race roughly on each of the bends. Mr Dunn added that he would be adding blinds to the gear of the horse for the second day in an attempt to make it race more on the bit which he anticipated would correct it's problems in negotiating the bends.
