Trainer A Grant advised Stewards that a change in racing tactics would be employed with KATE CATERINA, a starter in Race 5, in that it would be eased to a trail and saved for one run. He explained that when taken to the lead the horse has failed to run on in its immediate previous races.
Supplementary:
Bay Of Plenty HRC - Thursday, 16th October 2014
Race 1 - Shadow Play at Alabar Amateur Drivers Mobile Pace
An investigation was opened into the tactics adopted by Amateur Driver F Phelan (COUGAR BROMAC) during this event and in particular regarding the manner in which he drove leaving the back straight the final time and early in the run home. After taking evidence from Mr Phelan and viewing the replays the matter was adjourned to enable Stewards to review the recent racing of COUGAR BROMAC and also to examine betting on the event.
This matter was concluded at this evenings meeting with Mr Phelan admitting a breach of Rule 868(2) in that he failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the event to ensure that COUGAR BROMAC was given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible position and/or finishing place.
The particulars of the charge being that: 1. Between the 550 metres and 400 metres he failed to take the opportunity that was available to shift his horse out from a position four back on the pylons and ease JD's DREAM (J Darby) wider on the track thereby obtaining clear running and/or; 2. Between the 200 metres and 150 metres he failed to place his horse under any discernible and demonstrable pressure which would have given the mare full opportunity to win the race or finish in second place.
After hearing submissions on penalty the JCA suspended Mr Phelan's Advanced Amateur Horseman's Licence up to and including 4 June 2015 and also imposed a fine of $500.00.

LADY MARIA was in the one-one position trailing JEANIE POPS and was improved outward to a three wide position with 1150 metres to run and then was caught three wide without cover for the remainder of the race. He explained that rather than being shuffled back by the improving three wide chain he elected to move forward. In hindsight he agreed he may have been better served to stay in the one-one positon.
